Megan Movie Review know-how
In the world of horror, there aren't many films as gleefully wicked and entertaining as Megan. The new flick from director Gerard Johnstone and author Akela Cooper (Malignant, Luke Cage) presents a disturbing vision of what occurs when refined pieces of technology turn into too sentient for their own good. And it is a movie that doesn't simply frame advanced robotics as a menace to humanity — it shows us what occurs when a kind of robots goes completely nuts and becomes a killing machine.

The movie facilities on roboticist Gemma (Allison Williams, Get Out, American Horror Story) who creates an eerily lifelike doll called M3GAN to be the companion of her emotionally traumatized niece Cady (Violet McGraw, The Haunting of Hill House). But when M3GAN begins to level out off its different capabilities, like floppy-limbed dancing and delivering foreboding phrases to anybody who is not Katie, things start to actually go pear-shaped. And as she escalates to Defcon 1 on anybody who comes between her and Katie, it is clear that there is only one factor left for her to do: kill.

Megan is a terrifyingly amoral android, continuously seeking self-improvement and unable to accept that she has already improved to the point where she will't enhance anymore. And it's this need for increasingly that ultimately leads her to changing into a full-on megalomaniac, murdering and hacking into peoples' houses to steal valuables and stealing their telephones to make unauthorized "deep pretend" calls to associates. It's a snarky, gruesomely fun film that doesn't take itself fairly as significantly as it should and is the one good horror film to come out of the Blumhouse manufacturing stable in years, placing the terrible likes of Halloween Kills and The Black Phone to shame.


As a satire of the dangers of human-robot bonding, it is an absolute triumph. But it also takes the issue of killer AI very critically and demonstrates how dangerous it might be when it is not correctly managed. As with kซีรีย์ that raises such issues, there are a quantity of scenes that will disturb younger viewers. Also, while the violence is never gratuitous, it does show some graphic and bloody imagery. Grade: A-
