From the director of Yoga Hosers and Cop Out comes this physique horror movie a couple of man who turns his visitor into a human walrus. It’s Tusk, and it stars Justin Long as Wallace Bryton, a podcaster who is kidnapped by a cannibalistic Canadian walrus-obsessed nutcase.
It’s a strange turn for the Clerks and Red State director, who’s more accustomed to comedy, however this is an intriguing thought that would have been pulled off with some fantastic casting, some sharp path and some higher writing. Instead, we have a multitude of a movie that’s neither funny nor horrifying.
Tusk was conceived as a joke on Smith’s Smodcast podcast, where he requested his followers to tweet #yeswalrus or #nowalrus and let them know whether or not he should develop the story into a full-blown film. His fans responded in overwhelming numbers for him to go forward and do it, so he did, with one major caveat: he would solely direct the movie if he could star in it as well. So he did, with Haley Joel Osment and Genesis Rodriguez becoming a member of him in this tale of madness and mayhem.
The movie centers on Wallace, a podcaster who travels around interviewing people and looking for characters with attention-grabbing tales to inform. On certainly one of his excursions, he finds Howard Howe, who claims to have some fascinating sea and walrus-related adventures to share. Intrigued, Wallace flies as a lot as Canada to fulfill him. But Howe doesn’t simply have some interesting tales to tell; he also has another issues in mind for his new host.
From there, the movie turns into a horror story about a man who gets became a walrus. It’s a bizarre, twisted tale that mixes parts of horror and humor and may be very much like The Human Centipede minus the coprophagia. It’s also pretty gory, with plenty of blood and grotesque imagery.
เคซีรีย์ of Tusk is its forged, particularly Michael Parks, who was the standout in Smith’s other 2014 misfire, Red State. He’s just as good here, taking half in an unbearable prick with the kind of flamboyance that makes him a joy to watch. His initial scenes with Long are the highlight of the movie.
Unfortunately, as soon as the movie moves into the horror genre, it loses steam and seems like a gross-out gag. There are laughs available, but most of them come from the audience laughing at how unhealthy it all is. The film shifts uncomfortably between horror and comedy, but it’s by no means clear which method the filmmakers supposed to go with this one..
