Window Repairs
Window repairs can save homeowners money and help keep their homes comfortable. In the event of serious damages, like broken glass or a shattered frame, window replacement may be required.
But there are many other issues that can be fixed to prolong the lifespan of your windows. The most frequent issues are:
Broken or cracked panes
If it's an unintentional rock being tossed by your lawnmowers, or a tree branch that has been blown by high winds, cracked windows are not just ugly, but it can also result in higher electricity bills as the broken pieces allow cold air into your home. It's fairly easy to fix windows that have broken panes.
Start by carefully removing glass using gloves and sunglasses. You may have to use a utility knife to break loose the old glazing compound or putty around the frame's edges. Next, use a soft cloth or paper towel to wipe the surface of the glass and the wood of the frame.
After cleaning the area, apply a silicone caulking that is water-proof to the frame's perimeter. This prevents water from getting into the crack, which can cause further damage to the frame and the glass.
If you have double-pane glass, a bad crack could compromise the gas layer that lies between the panes and render your windows less efficient in insulating. If the crack is severe enough that it compromises the strength of the window, or if the inner pane is missing you might need to call an expert.
Cracks in thermal stress can occur when there's a significant difference in temperature between the inside and outside of your home, causing the glass to expand or contract. If this happens across two portions of a window it's best to replace the window instead of trying to repair it.
For windows that have cracked but aren't yet ready to be replaced, clear tape can do a decent job of preventing the crack from spreading and preventing the entry of bugs and cold air. You can cut a nylon stocking large enough to completely cover the crack, and then attach it using duct tape. It's not an end-to-end solution, but it can keep cold air out and insects away from your home. If you notice cracks appearing on the windows of your old ones it is recommended to contact the local company to determine if replacing the whole window is a better solution.
Rotten Wood
Wood rot is a common problem with windows. It can alter the appearance of a home and can also be an hazard to safety. However, it is possible to repair wood that has rot. First, you will need to ensure that the source of the rot has been dealt with. Examine for leaks in the roof and other areas that water may get into the wood.
Next, you will need to remove any rotten areas of the window frame. This can be done with either a chisel, a rasp or claw hammer. Once the rotten areas have been eliminated then you must replace them with fresh wood. Pre-treated wood is recommended for this project since it will resist the onset of rot. If you are not able to replace the wood damaged by rot then you can use filler or wood hardener to strengthen the damaged area. Many hardware stores will sell this kind of product. To get the best results, make sure you follow the directions on the label.
Once you have replaced the rotten areas of the windowsill, it's essential to protect the newly-repaired area. This can be done by applying an water-resistant wood sealant. A product such as Sikkens is a great choice to accomplish this task.
Use a two-part epoxy in order to safeguard the wood from further damage. It is easy to apply and provides a good finish. It is important to follow the instructions on the label. After the epoxy filler has dried, you are able to rub the wood's surface. Start with a rough sandpaper then move on to an easier grade.
You don't want to expose your damaged area to more moisture. It is a good idea therefore, to cover the repaired surface with an oil-based prime which will shield it from water. After that, you can apply waterproof wood sealant.
The website won't work
There are many reasons why windows won't open. Wood frames can warp when exposed to rainy weather, or the house could have settled or someone might have closed it to protect themselves. With a bit of patience and the right tools, you can open the majority of stuck windows.
One of the most frequent reasons for windows that isn't able to open is the accumulation of debris or gunk on its moving parts. Dirt and grime build up on the sliding tracks, hinges and locks over time, says Acme Glass. Additionally, metal hardware may be rusty when it comes in contact with humidity or direct sunlight. Making sure these areas are lubricated with spray grease can help to prevent the oxidation process and ensure that your window is operating properly.
Stuck windows can be the result of a loosening or breakage of the pulleys that are used to lift and lower the window. These parts can lose tension and cause obstruction when they are situated at least two floors above ground.
If you have difficulty opening a door, try using a pry-bar to gently open the window. Place a block of wood on the frame to give your pry bar more leverage and be careful not to damage the window or the wood. Try using repairmywindowsanddoors to dry the frame's edges for a few minutes. This will warm the wood and make it easier to move.
A faulty spring can also be the cause of windows that don't lift or lower. You'll need to check the owner's manual for additional details based on the manufacturer of your windows.
