This a good advanced assembly, but to really figure out the structure and pace of the film, try introducing more elements in the next cut.
For each flower introduction, the flowers need to stay on the screen a little longer.
The editing needs to be more playful – use jump cuts throughout – lingering on shots for too long takes away from some of the scenes. Shots needs to be shorter, and the only way for you to determine the length is to record some temp narration and figure out how it will work. Just having subtitles on the screen doesn’t help us.
Scene 1 – do you have close-ups of the books she is packing away... This scene is too long.
Cut the shot of Tom lifting the log right after second grunt.
Do you have an alt shot of Daria looking at Tom.
Scene in the car – this needs to move along faster. The energy is not sustained in what is an otherwise well done scene. The awkward silences need to be cut down. The use of the the two shot through the glass in not very effective.
The repetition of “it is over” while amusing, should be something you try working into other sections of the film as well. The cuts need to be tightened for the punchline to have maximum effect.
Do some temp ADR here when she is thrown onto the curb? – The Temp ADR sound fixes throughout since you are dependant on the length of narration and the length of dialog beats to find the rhythm of the edits.
The scene when she puts her head in the oven is far too long. Cut right to the shot of her lying down with the fake light and mistimed throwing of the roses. Play with the sound design here and add O.S. elements.
In the Michael sequence cut the pool scene. It doesn’t do anything. The polarid scene – start with a polaroid, then show the beat where he shows her how to use the camera. Do you have more interpretative theatre beats?
Shorten or consider cutting the bar establishing shot – Start with the cutaways before they walk inside.
Archie scene at the coffee shop needs to move faster. Trim the dialog.
Something to try - from the shot of the letter cut to the shot of TV with Sleepless in Seattle scene.
The Veronica has the music dominating here and is a little to quick. Any additional beats you left out of the cut?
As for the end sequence all the considerations in class are worth exploring. I have not approved your re-shots until you know what you will be shooting for this sequence. Have some plans when we meet Wed. as to what your thoughts are after some time to consider all the suggestions.
