a behaviorist would not look at the mind or brain to understand the causes of abnormal behavior and instead would assume that the behavior represents learned habits from past experiences. For example, If someone is struggling with ADHD, instead of looking to medication to address the problem, a behaviorist would assume that the lack of focus comes from some past experience such as the person's parents never being strict enough, or having a chaotic childhood. This is good at explaining situations relating purely to behavior such as how a person's response to touching a hot pan would be to avoid touching hot pans in the future. Behaviorism is just good at explaining behavior in general.
Cognitivism
focuses on how the mind receives, processes, organizes, stores, and retrieves information. cognitivism looks beyond observable behavior, viewing learning as an internal mental process.
Cognitivism is good at explaining the mind at a biological level. because it explains thing based on a neuronal level. whereas behaviorism ignores the processes that happen when one learns not to touch a hot pan, cognitivism would explain that there are mental processes that cause synapses to form the association between hot stuff and pain. Cognitivism is good at explaining how humans learn language, perceive things, and remember things.
Symbolic computation
views the human mind as an information processing system in which everything can be explained in terms of mathematical computation.
Trying to explain the brain entirely from aa symbolic computation perspective is difficult and convoluted. whereas we can explain very small parts of the brain mathematically, it would be convoluted, pointless, and excessive to try to explain the brain in terms of one big mathematical equation. Symbolic computation is, however, good at representing the mind as it relates to artificial intelligence and computer learning
