Private ADHD Clinics Exposed
Untreated symptoms can lead to serious problems for those with ADHD. These include problems with relationships and work, depression and anxiety.
Private assessments must adhere to Nice guidelines. They are only performed by UK licensed psychiatrists or ADHD nurses or "other appropriately qualified healthcare professionals". Each private assessment company has their own policy regarding GP referral letters.
What is ADHD?
ADHD sufferers have a difficult time paying attention, sitting still and following directions. They might talk or fidget too much or interrupt others in a constant manner. Their problems can manifest in their relationships, careers and general functioning. People with neurodivergent disorders can also be imaginative, creative and active in their professional and social lives.
These issues are usually evident in school where students must be able to sit and focus. It's impossible to learn if your child is running around in the classroom, or is unable to focus when their teacher speaks. This can lead to poor performance, strained relationships with parents and teachers and difficulties keeping up at school.
A psychiatric provider diagnoses ADHD by examining symptoms and taking a medical history. They also complete questionnaires, rating scales and perform a physical examination. A psychiatric assessment can include mental health diagnoses such as anxiety or depression, and details about the child's education and family history as well as the child's upbringing.
When a person has inattentive ADHD, they only have trouble with the inattentive symptoms and may not be as easily identified as someone with hyperactive-impulsive ADHD. Previously, this was called attention deficit disorder (ADHD). Children with inattentive symptoms are less disruptive at school but struggle to stay on task and organize their work. They may make careless errors at home or miss important conversations or events.
The most common type of ADHD is combined type, which means the person displays at least six of the inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms. This is the type of ADHD that most people imagine when they think of someone suffering from ADHD.
It's not clear why boys and children assigned male at birth are more than twice as likely to receive an ADHD diagnosis as girls and children assigned female at birth, but it may be because they have more of the hallmark hyperactive-impulsive symptoms that are easier to see and identify. This disparity shows how crucial it is for parents to speak to their doctor about any concerns they may have regarding their child, regardless of gender or sexuality. They can then assess whether their symptoms are typical and determine if treatment should be considered.
Why do I need an appointment with a doctor?
There is a growing worry that people are being 'over diagnosed with ADHD/ADD. This is due to a shortage in funding for NHS mental health services, and long waiting lists for assessment. Many people have sought out private assessment and diagnostic services. Some of these private providers are now causing concern as they seem to be selling false diagnoses. This has resulted in the BBC airing a documentary called Private ADHD Clinics Revealed.
This documentary highlighted some of the shoddy practices that are prevalent in some private ADHD assessment firms, but the issue is much more extensive than this. Anyone with concerns about treatment should consult an expert in healthcare who is an expert in this area. This could be a psychiatrist, GP or another healthcare professional. This will ensure that the healthcare professional follows the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence guidelines for assessing and treatment ADHD.
In addition to following NICE guidelines, it is important that the healthcare professional has experience and is skilled in diagnosing ADHD and managing the symptoms. It is therefore essential to select a provider who offers a comprehensive ADHD evaluation. This will include a conversation with the client about their symptoms and how they have been affected, a thorough review of their mental health history and taking into account information from people who know them well.
After the assessment, the clinician will be capable of confirming or denying the diagnosis of ADHD and discuss how they would like to proceed with their care including the possibility of medication. They will also discuss any other mental issues that the patient may have in addition to their family history of mental illness.
It is important to remember that if your physician believes that you suffer from ADHD they will have to prescribe stimulant medications. This is a legal requirement under current UK laws. Certain private assessment providers might require the GP referral, whereas others do not. Before making a booking, always check with the provider.
How do I get a diagnosis?
Receiving an ADHD diagnosis is a stressful and intimidating process. But, it's important to remember that having a diagnosis can help you. It could explain why you struggle with certain skills such as concentration, listening with attention and following instructions, as well as organisation, things that come naturally to others.
With the right help, you can manage ADHD. A combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy and lifestyle changes can help you overcome the challenges that come with ADHD. Adults who suffer from ADHD are typically characterized by problems with concentration, impulsivity and poor time management. These problems can lead to low self-esteem, difficulty in forming relationships and even problems at school or work.
Adult ADHD can be difficult to identify because of the fact that it has symptoms that overlap with other mental health conditions. People of color and women might also have a tougher diagnosis due to racism and sexism. This is because doctors might not take their symptoms seriously or assume that they aren't really suffering from ADHD.
A private ADHD assessment is similar to a standard psychiatric assessment but will involve more in-depth discussions with the doctor and an in-depth interview about your symptoms in various situations. You will be asked to rate your symptoms and their impact on your daily functioning. The test includes a physical examination and blood tests in order to determine if there are any other medical causes for your symptoms.
If you've received an appointment with your GP, Priory will contact you to schedule an appointment with one of our skilled psychiatrists. We'll require you to complete a series of screening questionnaires and provide any supporting documents you may have. These questionnaires are used to determine if you show enough signs of ADHD to warrant an assessment.
When answering these questions, it's important to be honest and explain in detail how you feel. This will help us identify the most appropriate solutions for your treatment. After you have completed the ADHD assessment, we will discuss the results with you and suggest an appropriate treatment plan.
What happens next after the test?
If your GP thinks you might have ADHD they will refer you to a mental health specialist typically a psychologist for an assessment. GPs cannot diagnose ADHD however they can assist you in describing your symptoms and inquire about family mental health history and co-morbidities (the term used to describe different disorders that can occur in conjunction with ADHD). It is often beneficial for you as well as your partner or a close friend to attend the assessment together. The assessment is a conversation between the specialist and you, and it can take 45 to 90 minutes. The test will consist of a checklist of symptoms and questions regarding your symptoms in different situations and at various times throughout the day.
If the clinician conducting the examination believes you might be suffering from ADHD the doctor will discuss with you the possible treatment options. They will also discuss any health issues you might have. They will also look at the way your symptoms affect your professional, social and generally. They will then discuss with you if they think that you might be able to benefit from treatment and if they think you would prefer to be referred to your GP to be managed together.
You may not feel comfortable discussing certain details with your doctor. It's not a good idea to discuss specific details about your previous experiences. You can choose to leave a question unanswered or refrain from answering it if you are uncomfortable. iampsychiatry.uk do not cover the costs of ADHD assessments or medications even if they are diagnosed with ADHD. If you are insured by one of these insurance companies you should verify whether it covers an ADHD assessment and treatment prior to taking the next step.
Depending on how much you pay for your private diagnosis, your doctor will either give you an treatment plan or refer you to your GP for further discussions. If you opt to take a treatment plan, your doctor will likely want to adjust your medication so that you are taking the appropriate dosage before prescribing it.
