KOOBOO CHAIRS LOVE LOVE!! CHEAP CHIC DINING CHAIRS PINK SO CUTE WITH WHITE SLIPS
I’ve ordered some Milini 150g sketchbooks as my ‘everyday’ sketching stock for early 2013. Judging from his web site, Radin's work is truly reminiscent of the Something's Gotta Give house. You can see the similarities in his other work in his portfolio. Regardless of who is the true mastermind behind the SGG house, Radin is a true talent - he has a fresh, youthful look which is always calming and serene by his choice of colors.

So it’s all very well to sketch in Bangkok Wat Arun or the Great Mount or the Royal Palace. Which is why the farang-0perated Attic Studio is interesting because they do clothed figure drawing of a Thursday morning, events called “Bangkok Life” incorporating everyday working Bangkokians. The owners definitely wanted the feel of the SGG house, but not a carbon copy. I love the rug here, similar but not nearly as bold as the Hamptons House rug.
KOOBOO CHAIRS LOVE
This picture of the kitchen shows more on the left side than has previously been published before. Again, by posting the pictures of the SGG house on his web site, Radin insures that his name is tied to the movie, forever - a great business decision for his future. The eating and kitchen area of the living room above. Love the way he used a vintage rattan sofa as a banquette around the table.
Unfortunately I had to do this thumbnail standing up, hard up against the back of the Capitol Theatre building. The gritty contour of the wat is common in urban sketchers’ work. I love the rug here, similar but not nearly as bold as the Hamptons House rug. A nice coffee stop at Kurraba Wharf, the sort of place where you’re greeted as a fellow local by complete strangers. I need to check out ships and works at Garden Island from Lady Macquarie’s Chair close-up; I never realised, too, that there is a Sydney Ferry stop at Garden Island. That said, many urban sketchers in Bangkok seem to favour not tiny sketchbooks but prepared boards and large watercolour sheets, not unlike their counterparts in Singapore.
Unfortunately for Sydney, its soul lies in the bland suburbs, not the flashy Central Business District and iconic examples there of very dysfunctional architecture. That said, there are some wonderful examples in the Urban Sketching world of Giorgio Morandi stay-at-home types who travel but little. Intrigued by any new building or city, here or overseas, I like to train myself up by working from photos. Coming upon the building in reality is always a joy after having observed it closely at home.
Unfortunately I had to do this thumbnail standing up, hard up against the back of the Capitol Theatre building. The Sydney Town Hall is currently being renovated but I couldn’t help wanting to capture the billboard covering up the tower with its oversized photo of the original. This close up of a living room reveals the house is on the beach, probably in Malibu.
The area positively oozes Money, the smell of which is initially overpowering. Some interesting 1920s/30s residences near Neutral Bay Wharf but they are so clean and bright, it’s hard to tell whether they are original or mock. In the manner of Roz Stendhal, it lent itself to gouache, but this paper doesn’t take kindly to water, I think because it’s 30% recycled. Roz’s signature style relies on a single subject (with no background paper showing through) against a strong blank background. One can’t leave a blank background with figurative drawing though, but I will simplify it next time. One of the weaknesses of Urban Sketching is the ease with which sketchers fly in and out of cities, stopping only to capture the tourist postcard icons.
LOVE!! CHEAP CHIC
Perhaps its sleepy residential character means on-location may be more productive here than elsewhere in Bangkok. I settled into the lower (Australian) garden below the May Gibbs’ studio for some views across Neutral Bay to Lady Macquarie’s Chair, Garden Island and Fort Denison. As the hours passed and the clouds lifted, it was fascinating to watch the midday sun shed more detail on the subject.

Radin likes to use dark wood furniture, light upholstery fabrics, cushy, down filled sofas and chairs, and rattan and wicker accent pieces. Again, he uses no dark colors, no velvets or silks, or chenille's (thank God!!) - Radin has a "look" which he stays true to, despite the architecture of the home. I’ve determined to maximise people-sketching at Sydney Sketch Club meetups and not focus solely on architecture. I wasn’t able to capture the delicate pink-red (?) of the foam antlers and a darker red when in shade, but over the PITT pencil I worked Caran d’Ache 9B pencil. Looking all the world like a Toulouse-Lautrec danseuse, these sellers work in pairs selling red foam antlers on behalf of a cancer charity. Guidebooks for tourists describe it as ‘seemingly forgotten yet visit-worthy for its sleepy residential districts connected by klorng canals’.
DINING CHAIRS
Again, the pairing with the chocolate chip cookie was amazing because it perfectly washed down the crumbs and sweetness with one sip. The building on the right doesn’t appear in the single YouTube film clip devoted to Wat Kalayanamit (named after its benefactor) but it was useful to try and draw what looks like a bot head-on. The bright red, green, yellow and gold make me think it’s been restored recently, also the pure unadulterated white of the plaster or whitewashed columns.

This view really highlights the importance that the books and bookcases played in the design. Notice how much warmth the books add to the room. Also, this is konsep mewah rumah shabby chic a great view of the windows with the transoms and the flowing, linen curtains. From the portfolio, this family room again has a Hamptons House feel to it.
PINK SO CUTE WITH WHITE SLIPS
I’ll spend more time looking at Bangkok Sketchers Facebook to see how the locals do their sketching. The next involves Staedtler pigment liner 0.1 pen (the thinner 0.05 is completely useless) with Prismacolor coloured pencil highlights. The gritty contour of the wat is common in urban sketchers’ work.

Each to his/her own style of course, but it’s interesting to compare working methods and ‘corporate’ styles of various Urban Sketching groups around the world. The last involved Derwent Graphitint which are graphite pencils able to be ‘diluted’ of their pencil marks with water. By contrast, I used Prismacolor colored pencils which are wax and waterproof for the sky. The bright sunlight of the original photo lent itself to distinct geometric shapes which of course were washed away with the water. The paper is too thin for water, so no more wet media in this particular sketchbook.

The word “sleepy” is code for no noisy dining and drinking venues. I suppose too that means it offers some perspectives on authentic, rather than ‘international’ Bangkok life. I assume it’s not as modern or contemporary as the suburbia of Greater Bangkok in the north; perhaps it’s a less ritzy version of Banglamphu known as “Old Bangkok”. They say the best time to see it is in the early morning – before the touts come out and the heat too oppressive – , made somewhat difficult by the fact that the area is not abundant with hotels and accommodation. In terms of transport to and from this part of town, I’m guessing it’s easiest approach by the river, the Mae Nam Chao Phraya of the event’s title.
