Nazarbayev’s support for nuke nonproliferation is among the reasons that the country was invited to host the event. Kazakhstan is a leader in nonproliferation since it gave up its Soviet-inherited nuclear weapons. After the Cold War, US focus on Central Asia has been restricted to Afghanistan.

Additionally, the split with Pakistan was crucial for Trump's South Asia strategy. As such, the US required Kazakhstan as a back-door alternative shipping route for Afghanistan.
