-what are (the Salem) witch trials? -> explain why i mainly talk about salem in the beginning (main theme)

3rd file: (what?)
-witch tirals are hunts and prosecutions of so called witches
-they began in the 14th century in europe and 1692-63 in salem
-with the trials hysteria and widespread scapegosting took over worldwide

4th file: (book)
-malleus maleficarum - the hammer of witches
-written by heinrich kramer c. 1486
-handbook andguide for hunting down witches / how to detect one etc
-used until well into the 18th century

5th file: (beginning)
-began with Elizabeth Parris and Abigail wIlliams starting to act out ( speaking in tongues/ convulsed their body / said they saw their dead neighbour in their room = hallucinations) -> symptoms of convulisve ergotism with is a fungus
-went to the doctor who diagnosed them with sufferin of witchcraft
-soon after more girls acted out like them and hysteria and accusations began
-in europe people always believed in unseen powers and the evil, hysteria came about and people were accused


6th file: (what a witch went through)
-person was accused and arrested
-went to a trial where they concentrated on 3 kinds of evidence ( will later explain better)
-went through test to prove innocence
-if proven guilty-> execution

7th file: ( tests- evidence)
-swimming test (thrown into a body of water if the person sank they were proven guilty
-bible vers reading test in court
-torture to get an confession (pressed with stones)
COURT:
-confession
-testimony of 2 eyewitnesses of acts of witchcraft

8th file: (executions)
-s: civil crime ( sorcery ) -> E: crime against religion (heresy)
-S: hanged (set punishment for sorcery) -> E: burned alive
-S: 1692-93 E: 15th century - c. 1755
-S:200 prosecutions - 30 found guilty - E: 100,000 prosecutions
-S: 19 executions - E: 40,000- 60,0000 executions
- have to say in salem lived only 500 and in europe 70.2 million in 1550
-end of the trials-
S: trials ended when the govenor of colonial massachusetts (whose wife has been accused) intervened and stopped the witch hunts. the accused were relesed and pardoned
E: during 17th and 18th century (c. 1755) prosecutions and executions for the crime of witchcraft declined in number and eventully came to an end
