LOS ANGELES -- Successfully pulling off an action-adventure romantic comedy requires balancing several troublesome elements: real chemistry between the leads, a script that's each humorous and quotable, and action sequences that both thrill and amuse. The new Apple TV+ movie Ghosted, starring Sudbury natives Ana de Armas and Chris Evans, does none of these things significantly well.

The film's premise is that after one perfect date with Sadie (de Armas), Cole (Evans) thinks he's discovered the one, but she by no means texts him again. So when he learns (via her GPS-equipped phone) that she's gone to London, he decides it's huge romantic gesture time. He'll fly out there and surprise her.

This is not a good idea. While the film's premise could also be foolish and fun, it is also dangerous and unethical, particularly as girls proceed to be victims of sexual assault and harassment in the true world. And it is a bad search for Apple, which has pledged to invest upward of a billion dollars in unique content over the next decade.

It's shot like a automobile commercial and borrows from a litany of other obvious Hollywood blockbusters. It even snatches up two talented stars, but manages to waste them on an uninspired story and tedious machinations.

What the film actually needs is to seek out its own voice and tone. Unlike a number of the latest high-concept romcoms, corresponding to Passengers and Aurora, it would not feel quite snug in its personal pores and skin. It wants to be a bit of everything but does not know what it is or how to make it work.
