Whether you really liked her music or hated it, there is no denying that Whitney Houston was an icon. She was an extremely gifted singer who, unfortunately, succumbed to addiction and died at the age of forty eight. The property of the late celebrity has partnered with director Kasi Lemmons and author Anthony McCarten to craft this movie, which follows the first three a long time of the singer's life.

The film opens with a montage of Houston's early performances as a gospel singer. It is right here that we see her hovering vocals and the craving for stability that would continue to elude her as her fame rose.

From there we leap to her signing with Clive Davis (played by Stanley Tucci), which was a significant turning level in her profession. Despite a warning from her mom Cissy to avoid Davis due to his "white audiences", Whitney takes him up on the supply and becomes a global star with seven straight primary singles, a feat that eclipsed even The Beatles.

However, as much as this movie celebrates her success, it also points out the cracks in her psyche that led to her self-destructive habits and her eventual demise. A few cliches make their method into the script: an "Eureka!" moment, ironic reprises of her hits, and foreshadowing at each turn.

Naomi Ackie does an excellent job of portraying Whitney. She won't look like the singer within the slightest but she captures her vitality and charisma. It is a disgrace that the rest of the film round her is so stale.

This is due in giant part to the rushed tempo of the movie which appears to race by way of lots of the key aspects of her life in a flighty montage. This contains the connection with Robyn Crawford (Nafessa Williams), her father's disapproval of her sexuality, and her drug use.

It is credit to the property of the late performer that the delicate particulars of her life aren't sanitized. The film portrays her repressed sexuality, her relationship with Robyn and the medicine that would ultimately kill her. There is also an outline of her feud with the R&B unhealthy boy Bobby Brown (Ashton Sanders) that doesn't make him out to be as evil as some have made him out to be..
