Phelan, The Fastest Dog USA, 2020
My dog story began when I was twelve years old and my family adopted a wire fox terrier/poodle mix who turned out to be rather nasty. After Caesar bit yet another neighbor kid, mom said “train him or we get rid of him.” I chose the training route (of course!) and have never looked back, nor regretted a single instant of that choice. I was blessed to join a 4-H club led by two extraordinary women who were far ahead of their time in that they used positive reinforcement methods, way back in 1967 (we were derisively called “cookie pushers”). CJ and Anne showed dogs in conformation and obedience with great success and I was fortunate that they not only taught me well but introduced me to many legendary trainers in the Denver area. In 1972 we added two Golden Retrievers to the family and I entered the AKC world, participating in obedience and junior handling.

Their athleticism, drive, and fearless nature enable them to excel at this sport. Dock Jumping first appeared in 1997 at the Incredible Dog Challenge, sponsored and produced by Purina. Then in 2000 it was seen again at the ESPN Great Outdoor Games. The event was a huge hit and the sport has grown over the past several years to become one of the most exciting new dog sports in the world.

Is dog competition a sport? It's great exercise. And it just might be one of the most personally rewarding endeavors of your life. It's the world of canine sports and events, and many events are open for all dogs to enjoy, including mixed-breed dogs. Something special happens between owners and their dogs when they train for an event.

Novice Rally classes focus on the core skills of heeling, cueing, and maintaining engagement with your dog and will prepare you for Novice level competition challenges. Advanced class will focus on working seamlessly off leash, and skills like stand stays, spins, and managing distractions and will prepare you for Advanced and Excellent level competition. The Masters Skills class introduces additional distance challenges and skills that would be useful in rally, advanced trick titling, or even dancing with your dog. Humans and horses aren’t the only athletes to reach massive feats – dogs do too!

She and her late dog, Charleston, volunteered as a therapy dog team for The Good Dog Foundation. Charleston was a Labrador Retriever rescued from the Humane Society of New York. Social gatherings provide an excellent opportunity for poodle enthusiasts to meet, interact and bond over their shared interest in the breed. The events can include breed-specific gatherings where poodles and their owners can enjoy a group walk or day at the park. Additionally, clubs may organize general canine events that are open to all dog lovers, regardless of the breed.

Believing that you should always do what you love, I became a professional handler in 1987 and I have been presenting Canada's (and the world’s) top dogs ever since. With more than 550 All-Breed Best in Shows, I am proud to have been highly awarded at such prestigious shows as Crufts, the World Dog Show, Westminster Kennel Club and the AKC Invitational. What is the big famous dog show? THE WESTMINSTER KENNEL CLUB

The Club hosts the iconic Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, the second-longest, continuously held sporting event in the U.S., and since 1948, the longest nationally televised live dog show.

Training your dog will set him up for success when facing the world, create a fun and enjoyable activity for you to share, and decrease and eliminate behavior issues. We believe in positive training methods that promote a strong bond of love and respect between you and your dog. Any dog that likes to retrieve and has drive and focus can play. Those interested can start with a local trainer or by attending an event as an observer. As far as equipment goes, participants only need a dog-approved disc.

They also have a protective nature, which can come in handy in the field. In conclusion, Poodles may not be the conventional image of hunting dogs today, but they have the qualities and history that should not be overlooked. With their intelligence, athleticism, and lovable demeanor, these curly canines are more than just a pretty face. Even though Miniature and Toy Poodles might not be the first choice for hunters nowadays, don’t underestimate their prowess in the water.

Poodles must be familiar with the basic commands, such as sit, stay, and heel, which judges will evaluate during the show. Attending dog obedience classes organized by poodle clubs is a great way to ensure that your poodle receives consistent training in preparation for dog shows. Additionally, learning to walk on a leash is critical, as proper gait and posture are key factors in the dog’s overall performance. Many poodle clubs also host conformation classes, which can help poodles get used to the show environment and practice proper show ring behavior. To maintain their membership, some poodle clubs may require members to attend meetings, events, or participate in club activities.

By screening breeding animals for these conditions and choosing not to breed affected individuals, breeders can help reduce the incidence of these disorders in future generations. Poodle clubs often provide resources on the latest research and recommendations for genetic testing, as well as maintaining a community of responsible breeders committed to the betterment of the breed. Becoming informed about these aspects through poodle clubs ultimately helps you better care for your poodle and contributes to the overall improved well-being of the breed. Another variety of poodle club is focused on the rescue and rehoming of poodles and poodle mixes in need.

For more on feeding your Poodle, see our guidelines for buying the right food, feeding your puppy, and feeding your adult dog. The Poodle is protective of his home and family, and if strangers approach your house, he’ll sound a warning bark to let you know. And although he’s affectionate with his family, he may take a while to warm up to new people. The Toy and Miniature varieties were created by breeding small Poodles to each other, not by breeding Poodles to smaller breeds.
