Old Movie Review excessive
For a film about aging, Old doesn't have much to say. It's not that the film's premise isn't intriguing, or that it would not deliver some neat twists and intelligent visuals. But there's just something too self-aware about the way it sets up its personal lure, a kind of sadism that feels less like high concept and more like lazy storytelling.

The film starts with a shot of palm bushes dancing in the solar, and shortly cuts to a family in a automobile traveling to their tropical getaway, as if the human component of the story is already an afterthought, destined to be fodder for the high-concept thrills to come. Then, in fact, those thrills arrive within the form of a mysterious non-public beach that begins quickly aging everybody who steps onto it, with predicably tragic results.

As the household and their friends and neighbors start to die off at an alarming rate, it is clear that the eerie, unstoppable force that has them trapped on the beach is not going wherever soon, however what exactly are they up against? The movie resembles a cross between The Happening and The Sixth Sense, with a supernatural drive that may't be confronted or defeated by the characters' wits or weaponry.

The film's premise is not completely authentic, but Shyamalan has some clever ways of sprinkling clues throughout the story and constructing suspense with a rising sense of dread. One of the movie's handiest touches is the way in which it steadily accelerates the getting older process of the characters on display, from kids to teenagers to 20-somethings to aged adults. It's a surprisingly plausible effect, even in the context of a sci-fi thriller.
