The story of the Texas singer who turned a world icon is told on this evocative movie. Director Gregory Nava gives Jennifer Lopez a showcase role as Selena Quintanilla Perez, with sturdy supporting work from Edward James Olmos and Becky Lee Meza. The movie begins with Selena as slightly lady, performing in her dad and mom' Mexican restaurant and at South Texas carnivals. Her expertise is recognized by Abraham Quintanilla (Olmos), who begins to groom her for stardom and manages her escalating profession. Soon she is a sensation within the blossoming Tejano music scene, with concerts on the Astrodome and a prime place on the Latin charts. However, despite her success, Selena still craves mainstream recognition and begins recording an English-language crossover album that she would never full.

As she pursues her objectives, she struggles to maintain a steadiness between her household and her profession. She falls in love together with her guitarist, Chris Pérez (Seda), but her father resents his influence on the stage and on her career. Selena tries to reconcile her love of music and household whereas also battling rumors and the pressures of fame, and her sudden demise fuels additional exploitation of her title and picture by opportunistic media types.


Nava correctly avoids letting Selena's murder dominate the film. We first meet her killer, Yolanda Salvidar (Lupe Ontiveros), solely obliquely when Abraham and Selena confront her about missing cash from the fan club. The rest of the movie focuses on the singer's rise and her last live performance at the Astrodome.

The PG-rated film is understandably respectful of Selena, her household and her Mexican-American heritage. But this oftentimes plodding drama lacks insight into the bigger points of class, culture and family id that dominated Selena's quick life. Also, the climax, which features her brutal murder, feels rushed and clumsy. Nevertheless, Lopez delivers a stunning efficiency as the legendary singer. She captures Selena's luminous magnificence, innate sweetness and boundless power, although she lip-syncs the vocals to the true singer's recordings. In addition, the film includes a montage of Selena's singing at her live shows and assembly her followers. A touching and thoughtful tribute to a gifted entertainer..
