ADHD Assessments - Can You Get a Private ADHD Diagnosis?
BBC Panorama reported today that adults with ADHD are diagnosed by private clinics through unreliable video consultations. This is unfortunate, especially since NICE guidelines require rigor from trained, licensed healthcare professionals.
Fortunately, if your GP suggests you to undergo an NHS assessment in England you are entitled to a legal right to choose the provider that assesses you through Right to Choose (RTC). You can read more about it here.
What is ADHD assessment?
You could be suspecting ADHD If you or your child is having problems at home, at school or at work. But determining whether your child is suffering from ADHD requires a thorough assessment by a healthcare professional. This could include a psychologist or psychiatrist and often the child's primary doctor. Some healthcare providers offer online tests to test for ADHD symptoms however, they can be misleading and do not provide a diagnosis.
Before a test the doctor will talk to you and other people in your child's life such as day care and teachers. They will inquire about the nature of your child's behavior, how often it happens, and what effects it affects your family. The doctor might also inquire about any other medical conditions which could cause similar symptoms. This includes thyroid and sleep apnea.
In addition to the interview with the patient, the doctor will likely conduct several tests that are specifically designed for diagnosing ADHD. These include tests for continuous performance and an assessment of the behavior of ADHD. These tests determine how long it takes the subject to activate their "micro switch" when a visual or audio cue is presented and how much of their responses are "Omission Errors", which reflect inattention. The number of omission errors is correlated with the severity of ADHD.
Psychologists and psychiatrists will also inquire about the family of the client and personal background. Some will use checklists to detect ADHD symptoms for both children and adults. In most instances, however, a doctor will rely on their expertise in the field and understanding of the background of a patient to decide which, if any, questionnaires might be helpful in determining a diagnosis.
The most important thing to consider when conducting an ADHD assessment is that there aren't easy and quick solutions. Even the most experienced doctors struggle to diagnose it in their patients. It is crucial to seek an extensive, thorough evaluation by a mental health professional with expertise. You can seek recommendations by contacting the local chapter of National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) or CHADD. You can also request an appointment with your GP, or use the NHS's Right to Choose scheme.
What is what is a Psychiatrist Assessment?
A psychiatrist assessment is a series of questions, observation, and tests that are administered by a psychiatrist who is trained. It's intended to assist them in determining what kind of mental illness you might be suffering from and the best way to treat it.
The psychiatrist will start by assessing your symptoms and checking that there is no other physical reason. They will ask you a series of questions about your mood, what you have been doing recently and your family history of mental illness. They will also consider your current medications and how they're effective for you. They might also take into consideration your lifestyle and other factors that could affect how you feel.
A psychiatric evaluation usually takes between 60 and 90 minutes. The doctor will pay close attention to your symptoms and how they impact your daily routine. They will consider any other issues that you may have in your home and work life, how often you sleep and whether you're able to concentrate on your work or study. They will also consider your general health, any medications or alcohol you're taking and whether you have had any significant recent events that have impacted your mental health.
Then they will test your ability to focus and remember, as well as use mental reasoning. They will also watch your body language, how you talk and whether or not you are angry or aggressive. They will also pay attention to the quality of your hearing and eyesight.
In hospital settings, a psychiatric assessment is usually multidisciplinary, involving contributions from a range of healthcare professionals. This could include an assessment by nurses (which looks at risk of suicide, aggression and self-harm) and an assessment of physical health and an observational exam by the nurse.
Some of the questions you'll be asked during a psychiatric evaluation may seem intrusive or invasive however it is vital that you answer them honestly and accurately in order to receive a precise diagnosis. Talk to your doctor or care coordinator to get a second medical opinion if your mental health provider isn't offering the correct services. If they are unable arrange this for you, local charities and voluntary groups might be able to help.

There is a growing awareness of the fact that certain medical professionals have preconceived ideas regarding what a person suffering from ADHD looks like, and these biases can hinder individuals from being treated with respect when seeking an assessment. Adult ADHD specialists are trained to recognize these issues and offer a reliable diagnosis.
During the appointment, you will be asked questions about your symptoms and how they affect your daily life. The evaluation will also include an extensive psychotherapy session with a psychiatrist, as well as tests. These include online tests, clinical interviews and a range of validated tests.
After the evaluation, the psychiatrist will give you a a full report with their recommendations. If needed, they'll describe the benefits and recommend the best treatment strategy. They will also suggest other non-medical treatment strategies may be beneficial. A lot of the clinics that offer private assessments have a 'shared care agreement' with GPs on prescribing medication (meaning you pay the NHS prescription charge instead of the private fee).
