Louis Stevenson uses Mr Hyde to convey deeper themes about and messages about human nature and society. There are many inferences that can be made about Mr Hyde from this quote such as his evil side and his distance from emotions. The word 'black' can suggest that Mr Hyde has a dark and malevolent nature about him. His actions are morally and ethically reprehensible. They often involve violence and cruelty. Mr Hyde has a hidden and sinister aspect about him and the human nature that he represents. These aspects, however, are usually concealed within Dr Jekyll's personality. The inference 'sneering' suggests a contemptuous or mocking attitude. He has an utter lack of empathy and disregard for societal norms and he has an unusual human nature. His actions are often driven by his sense of indifference and callousness towards the suffering he inflicts on others. This word could also highlight his derisive and malicious nature. He does not care what he does. The term 'coolness' refers to Hyde's emotional detachment. He is portrayed as being emotionally distant, unemotional and unfeeling. His lack of emotions once again highlights his malicious nature as he does not care what wrong foot he steps. His actions are often carried out with a sense of detachment, as if he performs evil acts without any emotional involvement. The phrase 'like Satan' also amplifies once again his evil side. The expression ' Satan' has strong religious connotations as well as moral connotations. Mr Hyde is a perfect embodiment of evil nature, temptation and corruption of the soul. This is much like the Devil in Christian faith as the Devil tempted Adam and Eve into eating the forbidden apple. This comparison to Satan emphasizes the wicked and cruel nature of Mr Hyde.
Overall, Mr Hyde is a malevolent character who is unattached to his emotions. He underlines darker aspects of human nature and the consequences of unchecked human desires. Mr Hyde's actions serve as a caution of the dangers of suppressed emotions and denying the evil character of ones inner nature.
