Fireflies:
She walked into the grass, being tugged by her companion. It brushed against her sides. "Hah... it's so hot out here... what did you want to show me anyways?"
He giggled. "It's a surprise... didn't I tell you? Just keep those eyes closed."
She sighed and kept moving forward.
The two moved further into the grass until he let go of her hand.
"Okay, are you ready?" He asked.
She nodded and opened her eyes.
Met by the boy's smile, she turned to what nature had to offer. From the aftermath of the sunset, the horizon was decorated with silver clouds stained against the indigo skies. Hints of crimson and gold lingered beneath them. The shadows cast on the grass flooded towards the boy and the girl as they stood in the field.
The gentle summer breeze whisked her hair back.
"So, what do you think?" the boy beamed at her.
She didn't respond. Her eyes squinted a little and the corners of her mouth turned up.
"It's... beautiful, I'll say that much."
She wiped the sweat off of her forehead with her sleeve.
"So..."
"Share this moment with me." The boy turned his gaze to the heavens. "We're still early."
He got on his knee and set his bag down. After rummaging through, he pulled out a red blanket and spread it over the grass.
He patted one end and signaled for the girl to join him. He sat beside her and plucked a blade of grass to fiddle with.
The girl wrapped an arm around the boy and giggled.
"Sure... we can share this moment."
The purple sky began to darken. Silver clouds turned black as the sky began to speckle.
"It's that time of year..." the boy said. "I want you to look up... and tell me what you see."
"The night sky?" The girl inquired.
She buried the boy deeper into her embrace.
"The stars." He corrects her. "But this time of year... the stars are closer than you think they'd be?"
"What are you talking about?"
"Look into the field."
The two lowered their gaze back into the field of grass. Small, delicate orbs of light hovered over the grass. Though not very bright, they shone a variation of yellow, orange, and green.
"The stars..." she murmured.
The boy tapped her shoulder. From his bag, he pulled a sketchbook.
He flipped through the pages and held it to the girl.
“It’s you.” He smiled.
The girl frowned. “For me?”
“What’s wrong?” The boy asked.
She chuckled. “I would have preferred one of you.”
She playfully nudged the boy as he tucked the sketchbook back into his bag.
The stars over the grass danced with one another as the air began to cool. The Summer breeze picked back up, swaying the grassy field.
The boy remained silent. He placed his hand on his shoulder over his companion's hand. He locked his fingers with her and started to hum a gentle melody. She hummed along.
This moment they shared... even for it to become just a fleeting memory... was one that felt like it would last forever.
For on this moonless night, the two companions would perform the song that the fallen stars could dance to. Under the starlight... ...just for a memory...
The boy stopped his humming.
"Thank you. For joining me tonight."
He tried to get up. But the girl didn't move.
"Thank you... for sharing this moment with me."
She continued to hum.
"I should take you home." The boy whispered.
"Not until the fireflies go to bed." The girl responded with a grin.
With a smile on his face, he sat back down. The girl lowered her head onto his shoulder as she allowed her eyes to take in the sea of light spilling over the grassy field.
"It... it is beautiful." the boy whispered.
The two closed their eyes as their humming faded into the night.
***
The boy wakes up to meet the sunrise. With a yawn, he stretches and rubs his eyes. The stars and fireflies were gone. The morning air was cooler, and the sky looked as if it had been painted with pastels. A hint of blue lingered among the clouds.
He reaches to his side, flattening the blanket he slept on. He lets out a gentle sigh and reaches for his bag again. He gets up, folds his blanket, then tucks it away again.
The field was empty and quiet. And though the morning was beautiful, he couldn't help but let a tear escape.
"I'm sorry I insisted we go back so soon..."
He gets on his knee, pulling a sketchbook from his bag. He tears a page from it.
He lays it onto the ground, placing small rocks at its corners.
Though the skies were blue, and the clouds were light, a sprinkle of rain teased the page from the boy's sketchbook. The boy wiped his face.
"If I had known it was farewell..." he continued as he got up. "I..."
He stops. He looks down at the sketch.
"After all these years... I've come back to this spot... for you."
"And every year I come... I dream of you... just hoping Heaven would give me the chance to do it all again."
The boy chuckles weakly and shakes his head.
He walks back from whence he came, humming the tune from his dream. He places his hand over the strap of his bag, locking his fingers into it.
The sketch remained pinned to the grassy floor, meant to lay in peace.
Even if the sketch of her smile was just a fleeting memory...
"So thank you." His voice quivers. "For sharing this moment with me."
