「じゃ、ノートを見ればわかるわ」
和子は不吉な胸さわざがしてあわててノートを開いた。きのう
書きこんだはずのページにはなにも書かれていなかった。もとど
おりの白紙になっていた。和子は「あっ！」と悲鳴をあげそうに
なった。このページに書いた問題と、そして答案はどこへいって
しまったのか！ ノートの紙面のように色を失ってしまった和子
の顔を、神谷真理子が心配そうにのぞきこんだ。
「さてと、この問題を、だれにやってもらおうかな？」
問題を書き終わった小松先生は、きのうとまったく同じ調子で
教室を見わたした。和子は、隣から自分を見つめている真理子の
顔、メガネが光る小松先生の顔、黒板の問題が、目の前にぐるぐ
るとまわりだすのを感じて目をとじた。
――きのうと同じだわ、なにもかも……。先生はきっとわたし
の名を呼ぶにちがいない。きのうと同じように。
「芳山君、ここへきてやってくれるかね」
やはり小松先生は和子を指名した。
「は、はい……」
和子はあわてて立ちあがった。教壇に立ってチョークをにぎり、
きのうやったばかりなのですっかり覚えてしまっている答えを和
子は夢中で書いた。
これが夢なのかもしれないわ。地震や火事があったり、トラッ
クにひかれそうになったほうがじつは現実で――そう思った。ま
るで悪夢だわ！
「ほう、いやにスラスラとできたね」
