{start} Marie Maynard Daly was an African American biochemist who made many contributions to medicine and science. She was the first African American woman in the United States to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry, and the first to earn a Ph.D. from Columbia University. Daly went to Hunter College High School, a lab high school for girls, where she was persuaded to pursue chemistry. She then went to Queens college a small and new school in Flushing, New York, where she graduated manga cum laude from Queens with a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1942. During graduation she was named a Queens College scholar, an honor given to the top 2.5% of the graduating class. During her career, Daly worked as a physical science instructor at Howard University, from 1947 to 1948 while also conducting research under the direction of Herman Branson. She was awarded an American Cancer Society grant to support her postdoctoral research; she joined Alfred e. Mirsky's group at the Rockerfeller Institute, which studied the cell nucleus and its constituents. Daly began working in the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University in 1955. She continued her work as an assistant professor of biochemistry and of medicine at the Albert Einstein college of medicine at Yeshiva University.
