I’m Not really knowledgeable on hooks or side chains but can tell you a little bit about Wasm

Web assembly smart contracts

offers different coding languages like
C,C++, Javascript Golang, Rust, and more

EVM I believe is solidity

So Wasm allows developers to code smart contracts in a few different languages giving them a few more options for building Dapps

I believe this is why Coreum was built on cosmos SDKs because XRPL was limited at the time and they wanted to expand with smart contracts and eventually bring them to the XRPL

hints to why Coreum launched there blockchain on cosmos and actively working on a 2 way bridge

so assets from the XRPL can flow freely to Cosmos and assets from the Cosmos ecosystem can flow freely to the XRPL

Making it more interoperable

but on the smart contract side Coreum has a special feature called Smart Tokens
