Exploring M 11 With a Telescope
Located in the constellation of Scutum, M11 is at the edge of the rich Milky Way star cloud (the Scutum Cloud). mafialiga is one of the richest open clusters known to science. M11 is a rich, compact open cluster that has long been studied by astronomers. It was first noted by Gottfried Kirch in 1681, and was added to the New General Catalogue by Charles Messier on May 30, 1764. It has often been described as a “wild duck cluster,” because of its shape, which is thought to resemble a V formation of ducks in flight. The cluster also sits near the boundary of the Scutum star cloud, which contributes to its high concentration of stars.
It is also a great location to photograph nebulae and open clusters, because of the low level of light pollution in the area. Whether you’re an amateur or professional, you’ll find that M 11 is one of the most rewarding objects to explore using any type of optical instrument.
