This week, I conducted a brief interview with Tyler Fellman, founder of Fellman Watch Co., an early stage startup on a mission to build watches that can withstand even the harshest weather conditions yet still be considered highly fashionable. Take a look at this video to learn a bit more:
I’ve known Tyler for a couple weeks now and thought he would a be a great founder to write about. Tyler comes from a Mechanical Engineering background, and has recently begun the MBA program at ASU, and is beginning to learn the business side of running a startup. Tyler was recently plugged into the #yesphx community and is more than excited to meet more people and grow his venture. I asked Tyler a few questions.
What would the synopsis of your story as an entrepreneur/engineer sound like?
At first making the Fellman Watch started out just as a fun hobby that Tyler never expected to become a product at first. He told me that he remember the exact moment he realized that designing a watch was something he wanted to do. Tyler was at work, reverse engineering landing gear for a manufacturer… One day, he came across a blog post online about the complexity of a watch. Upon taking a closer look at the way watches are engineered, Tyler thought “I can make one of these too”. That was the start of everything. At first it was just a personal project, and Tyler designed the watch according to the things he personally would want in a watch: functionality, durability, and fashionability. Essentially, Tyler became the potential consumer for his watch. As everything began to come together, Tyler decided to turn this into a business and release to the world. At the current date, Tyler has raised $14,195 dollars on his Kickstarter campaign which has continued to grow.
“What keeps you up at night? What gets you up in the morning?”
I think the biggest thing that keeps me up at night is keeping the momentum going. I’ve been doing pretty good so far with the launch of my Kickstarter campaign and I just want to make sure I keep demand of my product high. What gets me up in the morning is that I have a passion for designing cool products that match my interests and is something that people love.
“What would you be doing if you weren’t doing Fellman Watch Co?”
I’d honestly probably be working for another engineering company right now or living in Germany. I used to live in Germany for a little bit before moving back to Arizona.
“What do you spend most of your time doing?”
Like I said, I’m mostly focused on trying to keep momentum going after the Kickstarter campaign. Marketing is definitely my biggest focus, but the class I took on marketing in ASU’s MBA program has been really helpful. It’s helped me build a better framework of thinking when approaching marketing. I’ve also been focused on making direct sales, targeting online advertisements, and looking for influencers to help push my product.
“What do you want your company’s culture to be?”
I just love adventures more than anything. I want my whole company’s culture- from 5 employees to 50 employees- to be centered around being surrounded around being adventurous. Ideally, it would be a close-knit group of people who work in a warm and friendly environment and could actually be friends even outside of work! I want the people working at Fellman Watch Co. to be full of kind, adventurous, outdoors-ee individuals. I envision our company trips to be something related to hiking or rock-climbing, so enjoying the outdoors is almost a must!
“What makes you adventurous?”
I would say that I just love being outdoors and being able to soak in what nature has to offer. Sometimes work can be exhausting, and I really value the importance of taking a breather every once in a while. Being outdoors helps me take a break from the daily grind.
Tyler is on a great path to creating a successful startup, and I’m sure he’ll keep evolving Fellman Watch Co. in the future. He eventually wants to launch a line of other kinds of outdoor gear that fits all the needs of his customers. From the office to the backcountry- Fellman Watch is the perfect watch.
“We believe in having the freedom to be adventurous. The Fellman Watch is stylish. Sturdy. Suave. We use cutting-edge technology to create a watch that’s not only fashionable and affordable, but is durable enough to handle even the harshest conditions nature has to offer. Whether you’re rock climbing, or cramming out paperwork, the Fellman Watch is perfect for it all.”
