How to Unlock your Vehicle

Modern electronic key fobs offer superior convenience and functionality compared to a traditional manual key. However, they do require batteries that eventually degrade over time and need to be replaced. If your Volvo keyfob only functions intermittently, it could be that the battery is be failing and you'll need to replace it in the near future.

You can replace the Volvo key fob batteries on your own by following a couple of steps. First, you must locate a clean working surface to complete the procedure. Set out all the tools you will need. Locate the battery's hatch and ensure it is set to "open." Use a flathead screwdriver, coin or any other similar tool to make the hatch to open. Then, carefully remove the battery by lifting the side closest to the hook on the key-ring. Be sure to wear rubber gloves to protect the contacts or the clips.


After the battery is removed, place the new one in its socket. Make sure that the positive side is facing upwards and that it is securely seated within all clips. Then slide the cover down and towards the key-ring loop until it is loose and slides off. Uncover the cover and reveal the hidden key blade. It can be used to unlock your car from the driver's doors when you've lost or broken the key fob.

How to Start Your Vehicle

Modern vehicles are usually equipped with key fobs which can perform much more than just unlock or lock the doors. They also have useful functions such as summoning or auto-parking the vehicle. In fact, the brand new Volvo XC60 can even remotely start your engine using its key fob buttons. How does it work exactly?

Find a clean surface on which you can arrange all the items needed to complete this project. Then lay the fob on the work surface with its Volvo logo facing upward. Utilize a flathead, coin, or any other similar tool to flip open the battery hatch. Be careful not to touch the electronic contact surfaces of the fob with your tools, as this could cause the key fob to cease functioning properly.

After the hatch has been opened, place the battery into its socket. Make sure the positive (+ side) is facing up. Once the clips are locked into place, remove the battery cover, and then reassemble the fob.

Pressing the unlock button once will deactivate the alarm and unlock the driver's door. By pressing it a second and then you can unlock all doors as well as the tailgate. The unlock button can also be used to open the windows on an extremely hot day or to let in fresh air before climbing behind the wheel. How do I change the battery?

First, locate the small slot in which the backup or emergency ignition key made of metal reside. Inject the blade of a screwdriver or prybar tool into this slot and gently pry the rear of the fob. Note: Some older Volvo models use another type of battery that is called the CR2025. CR2025 batteries have a thickness of 7 tenths one millimeter lower than a CR2032 and you'll have to be extra careful when replacing your battery.

Your key fob contains transponder chips that are programmed to your Volvo. When you insert the key fob into the ignition barrel transponder chips read the code and compares it to the one that is stored in the start inhibitor module of your car. If the codes don't coincide, your vehicle will not start. This is a crucial anti-theft measure that prevents your Volvo from running if the wrong ignition key is used.

You'll need to take your lost key to a dealer to get it replaced. Your car will also be reprogrammed. This procedure can take up to 10 days and will cost you a lot of money. However, there is a way to save some of the cost by doing the programming at home. You can find the necessary information in the owner's manual or on the internet. Remove the logo and nonlogo covers and place your key fob on a clean surface. Press the grey button on the upper right corner of your fob. This will unlock the cover and reveal the CR 2032 3V battery.
