Here are three of his most celebrated masterpieces:
Spoliarium (1884): This monumental painting is Luna’s magnum opus. It portrays the bloody carcasses of slave gladiators being dragged away from the arena where they entertained their Roman masters. The painting won the first gold medal at the Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes in Madrid and now graces the National Museum of the Philippines12.
The Parisian Life (1892): Also known as “Interior d’un Cafe,” this oil on canvas captures a scene inside a café in Paris. A woman, identified as a courtesan or prostitute, represents “fallen womanhood.” Luna’s own experiences in Paris influenced this evocative piece, which also provides a glimpse of his life in the French capital12.
La Bulaqueña (1895): Literally “the woman from Bulacan,” this portrait may depict one of the women courted by Luna after he lost his wife. Luna’s personal emotions are woven into this captivating artwork, reflecting both love and loss
