Glazing Repair - How to Repair a Cracked Window
Glazing can make a significant impact on the energy efficiency of your home. This is especially true in older double-glazed windows.
While it is possible to replace glazing points when the window is in place, it's simpler and quicker when the frame and glass are removed. This is also a great opportunity to change the gaskets made of rubber.
Broken Glass
Cracked windows aren't just unsightly but can also let valuable sunlight and heat to escape your home. Fortunately, it's possible to repair a broken window without the need for a complete replacement.
Begin by putting on protective gloves and safety glasses. You can also employ duct tape or a painter's tape to make an "X" on the glass that you intend to remove. This will stop any broken glass from falling on you as you work.
Cover a small crack on your window glass using tape to keep water, insects and wind out. One strip of tape should be sufficient for cracks with a superficial appearance, but if you're worried about the weather becoming worse before you can replace your window, use a heavier-duty plastic cover, like a tarp, or a garbage bag, to keep the glass in place until you obtain a permanent fix.
For cracks that aren't as shallow, try using a strong adhesive specifically designed for windows, like Loctite Super Glue Glass. This high-tech glue was designed to bond to glass and dries transparent to give a perfect finish. Apply it to the crack and let it completely dry before applying a new layer.
Stress cracks are a different issue that can occur to your glass window. Stress cracks are usually caused by large temperature changes and can rapidly spread across the entire window if not fixed. To stop stress cracks from occurring create an arc using a glass cutter near the crack. This can prevent the crack from expanding and reducing the severity for some days.
Examine the frame of the broken window to determine the size of the new pane. It should be slightly bigger than the opening to allow for expansion and contraction and also to compensate for any imperfections in the frame or on the glass. After you've cut your new glass to size apply glaziers' compounds around the edges of both the frame and the glass. Once the compound is dry, paint over it to match the rest of the frame.
Condensation inside of Double Glazed Windows
The appearance of condensation on the interior of double-glazed windows typically indicates that the seal has failed at some point along the window unit. This is a significant issue because it indicates that the heat that is coming from your home is being lost through the window, and can be costly for you and your energy bills.
Double glazing is designed to stop heat transfer between two panes, by sandwiching an air or vacuum layer between them. This creates a secure seal that blocks warm air from escaping. If the glass is warmer than the frame, condensation will form on the glass and cause damage to the window. If you notice condensation on your double-glazed window that you are unable to eliminate it by opening the windows, with extractor fans, using dehumidifiers, or by trickle venting, you might require the help of an expert.
Condensation on the outside of double-glazed windows is rare, but it can occur when the seal has begun to deteriorate between the glass and the frame. It's more frequent during winter, when the temperature is lower. This makes it easier to create condensation. The main cause of this is a flaw in the spacer placed between the window and the frame. This spacer contains desiccant, which is extremely absorbent and absorbs any excess moisture.
This could lead to moisture leaking into the gap when the desiccant is saturated. This can result in condensation and water in the gap, which is difficult to get rid of.
Most reputable window companies provide a guarantee and will replace the unit and glass of a window in the event that it's damaged by condensation. It is essential to notify your window installer immediately you spot them so that the condensation can be repaired promptly to avoid further damage to the window unit and the frame around it.
Shattering Window Glass
A cracked window pane could be more than an aesthetic issue. It could also pose an injury risk, particularly when it's spreading. It is best to have it fixed as soon as you can. There are many ways to go about it, including using glass adhesives specifically designed for windows in vehicles, which can be purchased on the internet or at a variety of auto maintenance stores. You can also apply a glazing compound for home use that is readily available at many hardware and home improvement stores.
Before beginning any task, put on thick protective gloves and safety glasses and sweep the area to get rid of large shards. You'll also want to remove any chips that have fallen. This will stop them from cutting yourself or a glass repair technician in the future.
It's better to stand on a ladder instead of on the ground. This will let you reach all the parts of the frame more easily and protect your glass from falling. It's also recommended to wash the rabbet before proceeding, which is the part of the frame around the window frame, where glass is likely to go. Apply a coat linseed to the rabbet and then wipe it down. This will aid in helping the putty to stick.
After the frame has been cleaned and the rabbet has been prepared It's time to put together the replacement pane. Take measurements of the width and height of the opening both ways, then order a piece of double-strength glass that is 1/8 inch smaller in both directions. You'll need glass points which is a steel triangle that keeps the glass in the right place.
With the window sash off the way, carefully pull it away from the wood molding with a flat pry bar. It is possible to scrape off old glazing putty using a utility knife or chisel. Then make use of the heat gun to warm any putty that doesn't come off. This will make it easier to remove.
Once the frame has been removed from the mold and the frame is pressed gently into the new glass in its place. Then, with a putty knife or glazier's point, fill in the gaps around it and smooth them out. Once the putty is dry, paint the frame in a similar color to the putty. Paint the glass and the compound by overlapping the paint slightly.
Replacement Window Glass
Wear eye protection and gloves when replacing a broken pane of glass. Tape off the area surrounding the broken window to stop it from shattering again in a different area when you remove it.
Start by removing the old glaze compound and glazing points (small metal triangles) from the frame using a knife. Clean the entire frame opening, and then apply a coat linseed to help the new putty adhere better.
Once the frame is ready, make sure you measure it to get a new window pane and buy it from a home improvement store or another retailer. Choose the panes 1/6th inch smaller in each direction than you measurement. This will ensure a tight fit.
Installing the new window is simpler than it sounds, but be sure to follow the instructions of the manufacturer to ensure right fit and long-lasting life for your replacement pane. Use a wire brush to clean the frame opening of any old paint or wood gunk. then sand it down to bare wood in order to enhance the seal between the sash and frame.
When you are putting the new window in place, use the point of your putty knife to lightly bed the new window against the wood frame. Then, press the glazier's points into the frame approximately every six inches to keep the new window firmly in place.
After double glazing window repairs has dried and the joint is painted, you can paint it multiple times to match the frame. Let the paint completely dry before moving on to cleaning and maintaining your window. Making sure your windows are clean and working correctly will prolong their useful lifespan and increase your home's energy efficiency. If your windows are older or not in great shape it is possible that you would be better off with replacing your windows completely. If you choose to go this route, we recommend choosing a high-quality, insulated window that will reduce your energy costs. The type of window you select will also impact the total cost of your project.
