And Now For Something Completely Funky: Oris Divers Sixty-Five Cotton Candy

In an industry so immensely snobby and at times elitist, it is always a breath of fresh air when someone tries to have a little bit more fun in the process. “Taking your work seriously but not yourself” is perhaps one of the most underrated virtues any artist could have. And BOY does the Swiss watch industry need that mentality right now!
Among many stale sports watches with predictable configurations almost always resembling popular watches from the biggest luxury brands in the game; what I like about Oris is that they give two shits about following the trend. They just like to have fun and provide people with something that might make them smile.
Such is the case with the ridiculously cheerful Oris Divers Sixty-Five Cotton Candy collection. Inspired by a sixties design (unsurprisingly), this watch model represents a more “vintage” approach to the classic dive watch design, separating itself from the substantially more modern and bulkier Aquis collection.

A stable member from Oris’s lineup, we’ve seen multiple iterations over the years from the Diver Sixty-Five. But never something like this. Just imagine being in that board room meeting. Can you picture their faces? I sure can and it’s hilarious. I love how loud, playful and ridiculous this is.
As you can see, the basic formula is a vintage case design but with a “cotton candy” colored dial screaming at you from all sides. Pink, blue or green; pretty much any color you choose will make you stand out immediately. Wear it with a suit or a formal dress and the effect is even more hilarious. It truly is about generating a visceral and instantaneous reaction.
So naturally, this watch has the same effect as things like the Scary Movie franchise, pineapple pizza or seeing someone eat French fries dripped with a McDonalds sundae. You either love them passionately or you hate their very existence.
Personally, I adore them. I find this oddly quirky combination to be surprisingly refreshing, original and good looking. At 38 mm, it also means that pretty much any wrist size out there can pull them off comfortably and effortlessly.
But to me, the best part about this collection is that you can make this watch even crazier (or duller if you prefer) with a simple decision: which material you choose for it.
The original Cotton Candy was unveiled exclusively with a bronze case. Bronze is a very special material in watchmaking because of its unique properties as a metal. When it’s new, bronze glistens and shines rather nicely, almost like gold does. However, it does have that very peculiar brownish hue to it which really makes it stand out even more. Combine that glow with any of the cotton candy dials and you’ve got a watch which looks crazier than Elon Musk and Ocasio-Cortez having a date.
Bronze is the insanely bold and risky path to take with this watch. It shows the world you truly don’t give a fuck. You’re here to have fun and let everyone else deal with it. But you have to consider that unlike stainless steel, bronze tends to age rather “badly”.
As time passes, bronze darkens notably over time, losing both its shine and softness. As rust begins to happen, a unique effect called patina takes place. And if you thought the watch looked insane new, it’s gonna look like something an alien would wear in a couple of years.
Let’s say you find this worrying. Let’s say you aren’t sure about having a long term relationship with bronze’s unique aging process. Let’s say this color combination between bronze and cotton candy is a bit too much for you. Totally understandable and frankly expected. It’s truly something 80% of people would never wear not even in their wildest dreams. But there is still something about it that calls your attention. “If only there was a way to dial down a bit of the “fun” in this release?”
Well, good news. There is.
Recently, Oris decided to offer the cotton candy dials with a stainless steel configuration. Available with both a steel bracelet or a matching rubber strap, you can truly experience the craziness from this release without having to call that much attention to yourself.
Either way, regardless if you prefer bronze’s yelling for attention or the simplicity of stainless steel, this still is one of the funkiest dive watches on the market today.
Another good news with this collection is that Oris’s main strengths relies on value proposition. The brand offers both configurations around the 2,500 USD mark. I know, saying two and a half grand is cheap is like saying Seth Rogen would be a fantastic James Bond. But it’s all about context. You’re paying good money because you are getting a finely made watch with an automatic Sellita movement made in Switzerland, the capital of high watchmaking.
Unlike most of the shit we buy nowadays, any of these watches will truly last you for a lifetime.
Sure. They aren’t cheap. But if you love watches and you love this unapologetically loud design, I think it is definitely worth it.
