Quarterback Conundrum

Ben Roethlisberger isn’t getting any younger. Last season, the Pittsburgh Steelers won the AFC North with a record of 13–13, but were ultimately upset by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the divisional round. While the Steelers still have enough in them to be a winning franchise, Roethlisberger’s uncertain future should make them start searching for alternatives.
In the 2017 offseason, Big Ben flirted with retirement, refusing to commit to playing past the 2017 campaign. While he is under contract until 2019, Roethlisberger still won’t commit to playing past the 2018 season.
“I’m just playing it one year at a time,” he told 93.7 The Fan, a radio station in Pittsburgh. “I’m excited to come back next year. You heard that some guys said that I’m going to play another three years, but I’m not going to look past one year.”
With that said, the organization has to start looking for options to replace their star quarterback once he finally decides to retire.
Landry Jones was drafted by the Steelers in the 2013 NFL draft, and has recorded 1310 total yards, 8 touchdowns and 7 interceptions so far in his career. While he is the most experienced option the Steelers have, he has proven to be nothing more than a decent backup in rotation.
Josh Dobbs was the Steelers’ 135th pick in the 2017 NFL draft. He played four years for the University of Tennessee, where he passed for 7,138 yards and notched 53 touchdowns. Although he has a solid college career, he still lacks experience to replace Roethlisberger in the near future.
In addition, Mason Rudolph was taken 76th in the third round of the 2018 NFL draft by the Steelers. Rudolph played at Oklahoma State for four years, where he acquired a few school records including career-passing yards (13,618), single-season passing yards (4,904) and career passing touchdowns (92).
“Whatever the case may be, the Steelers still have a couple more years of Big Ben to enjoy before he inevitably hangs up his boots”
The Steelers have yet to really invest into the quarterback position, but Rudolph seems to line up well when compared to Roethlisberger. Rudolph has a similar build to Big Ben as well, coming in at 6 feet 5 inches tall and weighing 235 pounds.
Rudolph also has a great arm, and although his mechanics aren’t the best, he has all the basic essentials to be groomed under Roethlisberger. Another bonus is that he has the chance to build much-needed chemistry with fellow draftee, wide receiver James Washington.
While he lacks some mobility, the Steelers shouldn’t see it as much of an issue considering mobility was never one of Roethlisberger’s strengths. Consequently, it’s likely that Rudolph becomes the heir to the Steelers quarterback position, while Dobbs may find himself on the trade block.
Whatever the case may be, the Steelers still have a couple more years of Big Ben to enjoy before he inevitably hangs up his boots, giving the organization more than enough time to start grooming their young crop of talent.
