5 Facts about Van Gogh You Probably Didn’t Know
here

Let’s be honest. When we think about fine art, we think about Vincent Van Gogh. His beautiful use of yellow, his delicate but persistent stroke, landscapes, sunflowers, and everyday people.
Here I would like to share with you some nuggets of information about the famous painter that you might not know about.
In summary, we’ll see how:
Vincent Van Gogh wasn’t poor.He had a (dead) brother with the same name. His affinity with nature started in his childhood. He painted for the first time at 27 years of age.He trained by copying Japanese prints (Hiroshige’s especially).Fact 1: Van Gogh did not come from a poor family. Contrary to popular assumption, Van Gogh did not come from a low-income household. Van Gogh’s father was a preacher, and his mother was from a well-to-do family in The Hague.
He did though have a fascination with the working class, as magnifically depicted in one of his first paintings (above), The Potato Eaters.
Fact 2: He shares a brother’s name. On March 30, 1852, Vincent Willem Van Gogh was born and passed away as a stillborn child. The future artist Vincent Willem Van Gogh was born exactly one year later, on this day. The fact that the living Vincent Van Gogh was aware of and probably visited a gravestone with his complete name and date of birth, off by just one year, suggests that this could have been psychologically challenging for Van Gogh.
Fact 3: He loved nature since childhood. Vincent was a shy, reserved young boy who liked to spend his leisure time exploring the countryside and taking in the natural surroundings. Vincent valued nature greatly throughout his entire life. We can see from details in his paintings of nature how it never ceased to inspire and soothe him.
Fact 4: It’s never too late. Vincent started painting at 27. Van Gogh never received any official training and didn’t begin painting until he was 27 years old. Throughout the ensuing ten years, he produced about 900 paintings. The fact that he also produced numerous drawings and sketches makes his rate of one painting every four days all the more remarkable. 650 letters were also written by Van Gogh at that time, with his most well-known letters to his younger brother Theo.
Fact 5: He closely adapted Japanese prints. Vincent loved the vivid colours and intricate designs of Japanese woodcut prints. Sometimes entire compositions were copied from these Japanese prints. Hiroshige, an artist Vincent frequently studies, provided the inspiration for the painting of the bridge in the rain shown above.
