The forces of evil and chaos keep busy in the DCU

From Vigilante to Doom Patrol and now Phantom Stranger. In a lot of ways, Paul Kupperberg keeps his name as an incredibly important figure in DC Comics at this time. He will produce multiple mini-series over the next year alongside two ongoing titles. But we won’t pretend he’s the star of the show of this book. That goes to the art of Mike Mignola and P. Craig Russell.
Mike Mignola had worked for the past couple of years over at Marvel, first on a Rocket Raccoon limited series, followed by short runs on Hulk and Alpha Flight. It seems likely John Byrne enticed him over to the Distinguished Competition, as he traded those two aforementioned books with Byrne before John made his own jump. His next work after this one will be with John Byrne as the writer. Mignola would do a total of three limited series and Batman: Gotham by Gaslight before turning back to Marvel and Epic for work. It wouldn’t be long after that for him to move to Dark Horse and debut Hellboy, his creator-owned work he’s been writing and drawing now for thirty years.
But the true innovation brought by DC was in pairing Mignola with the already legendary P. Craig Russell as the inker. Russell made a name for himself penciling Killraven back in the late 70s but turned to inking more in the 80s. His clean lines make many a great artist look even more amazing, but he pairs particularly well with Mignola. Both immensely talented artists wouldn’t team often, but this and the legendary Gotham By Gaslight show off just how skilled they were as a team.
The book opens with the world in chaos. Seismic events are rocking the world. Enmity between nations is at a boiling point. Chaos has taken over, much as was the threat of Typhon in the Doctor Fate mini-series. The evil Fate destroyed the Phantom Stranger at the beginning of that book, but he is reformed as this story opens.
Several figures from across the DCU figure into the ongoing problems. Commissioner Gordon is burnt out taking on numerous horrors. Jimmy Olsen pursues a mob target to the Russian embassy. Jenet Klyburn thinks the seismic activities around the world are anything but natural. Valentina…
