Medellin's Vertical Gardens
This vertical garden is a work of art where different species of orchids, shrubs and hedges are planted vertically. It’s a way to express that nature can grow in all conditions. In addition to the orchids, there are various plants such as roses, hibiscuses and jasmine. The garden has a library, with collections of books of botany, forestry, agronomy, gardening, landscaping and medicinal plants, which are donated by the family of the naturalist, doctor and botanist Andres Posada Arango.

The tour continues to the Ruta N complex, Medellin’s center for innovation and a magnet for tech companies like Hewlett Packard. Amid the sleek, glass-and-steel buildings are lush gardens and plazas. “This is a green city that wants to offer its residents an oasis,” Velez says. “We want to have people live with nature.”

Located near the main entrance, the Scientific Building (Edificio Cientifico) is an architectural highlight of Medellin’s botanical garden. It’s a showcase for plant collection and houses a climate-controlled herbarium.

From there, a path leads to the Garden of the Desert and Dry Climates (Jardin de los Desiertos). Here, plants that can survive in hot and dry areas are on display. The garden also has an interpretive panel that notes that only 8% of Colombia’s original dry forest remains.

At the nearby Provenza Arriba residential apartment block, designed by ALH Taller, the building’s façade is covered in a living wall. The walls are made of sandstone and adobe with a steel frame, and are covered in 3,000 plants from 25 different species. The firm worked with Ignacio Solano, who is an expert in bioconstruction and green facades.

Solano is the founder of the company Paisajismo Urbano, which designs and builds green walls and green roofs. He combines knowledge of ecosystems with his own patented system for gardening facades, which he has tested in the mountains of Colombia and Latin America. The result is a high-performance facade that has reduced the building’s energy consumption by up to 30% and lowered its carbon footprint.

After decades of drift, where architecture lost touch with its tropical modernism roots, foliage is fashionable again. In Medellin, a green (r)evolution has transformed the city into a lushly landscaped oasis, with a crop of high-profile hotels, upscale apartment blocks and holistic offices that put plants front and center.
