Geothermal power is a type of renewable energy that we get from the heat deep inside the Earth. In the Philippines, there are several places where this kind of power is being used. These places are called geothermal power plants.

Imagine the Earth as a big ball with a very hot center. This heat comes up to the surface in some places, like in hot springs or volcanoes. In the Philippines, these hot spots are used to produce electricity. The heat is used to boil water and the steam from the boiling water is used to turn turbines and generate electricity.

As of now, the Philippines has 9 active geothermal power plants across the country. These power plants can produce a lot of electricity, about 1,848.2 megawatts in total. That's enough to power a lot of homes and businesses! One of these power plants is called the Tanawon Project, which is located in Sorsogon City at the southern part of Luzon Island.

So, the next time you switch on a light or charge your phone, remember that the electricity might be coming from the heat deep inside the Earth! Isn't that cool? 😊

Here are the details for each of the geothermal power plants:

1. Tiwi Geothermal Power Plant: This power plant is a 234-MW geothermal power station in Tiwi, Albay, Philippines. The exploration of the Tiwi geothermal field started from 1964 to 1968 and power was first generated in 1979. By 1982 Tiwi became the world’s first water-dominated geothermal system to produce more than 160 MWe.

2. Mak-Ban Geothermal Power Plant: The Makiling–Banahaw (Mak–Ban) Geothermal Power Plant is a 458-MW geothermal power station complex in Laguna and Batangas, Philippines. The facility and the geothermal field are named after Makiling and Banahaw mountains. k

3. Bac-Man Geothermal Power Plant: The Bac-Man Geothermal Production Field, also known as the BacMan Geothermal Power Plant, is located in the provinces of Albay and Sorsogon in the Philippines. It is named for its location in the municipalities of Bacon and Manito. It has a total capacity of 150 MW.

4. Palinpinon Geothermal Power Plant: The Palinpinon Geothermal Power Plant is a 192.5-MW complex of geothermal power stations in Valencia, Negros Oriental, Philippines. The first power station was commissioned in 1983. (Source: Wikipedia, NGA Philippines)
5. Tongonan Geothermal Power Plant: The Tongonan Geothermal Power Plant is a 112 MW operating geothermal power plant in Leyte 4th District, Leyte, Philippines.

6. Mindanao Geothermal Production Field: The Mindanao Geothermal Production Field is located on the northwest flank of Mt. Apo in the Philippines. It has a total capacity of 107 MW.

7. Southern Negros Geothermal Production Field: The Southern Negros Geothermal Production Field is composed of two geothermal complexes namely: the 25-year old Palinpinon 1 and the 12-year old Palinpinon 2 with a combined installed capacity of 192.5 MWe.

8. Leyte Geothermal Production Field: The Leyte Geothermal Production Field is the largest geothermal area in the Philippines located along the northwest trending structures of the Philippine Fault in north central Leyte.

9. Mt. Apo Geothermal Production Field: The Mt. Apo Geothermal Field is located in the south-eastern part of the island of Mindanao, Philippines. Commercial exploitation of the field commenced in March 1997 with the commissioning of the 52 MWe condensing turbine.
