The Best Woodburners
The relaxation and blood pressure-reducing benefits of a wood burner are well-documented. But what about the tiny sooty particles that they release into the air?
New stoves are designed to comply with the EcoDesign directive. small wood burning stove can enjoy an inviting and cozy home without compromising on your environmental obligations.
1. Ekol Edge
The Ekol Edge wood burner is simple in appearance but does not compromise on performance. It's a great option for people who live in smoke-free areas, since it comes with ClearSkies Level 5 certification. This means it can be used to burn dry and seasoned wood logs as well as approved solid fuels. Its high heat output makes it an excellent option for large spaces. The huge fire glass also allows you to take pleasure in the flames.
It has a modern steel frame, which means it can be installed into both traditional inglenooks and freestanding situations. It comes with an integrated air wash system that keeps the glass clean and prevents the build-up of soot. The stove has excellent efficiency during the winter months, which means that a significant portion of the heat it produces is being transferred into your home rather than being lost to the chimney.
The criticism of wood burning stoves has grown, since it was discovered that they may contribute to the creation of microscopic sooty air particles referred to as PM2.5. These particles have been linked to lung and heart problems. However, the latest models that are made to comply with the Eco design Regulations are much less likely to create these particles. These are only a small portion of the total pollution created by burning fossil fuels like gas and coal, but there is no doubt that wood stoves are a source of this pollutant.
The right wood for your stove is crucial to ensure the highest heat output and combustion. There are a myriad of wood that can be used for burning, including eucalyptus, ash, hazel and beech. Eucalyptus is a great choice because it's fast-burning and provides a lot of heat, but it requires to be seasoned. Beech is also a good choice, but it's difficult to work with due to its thorns.
The Ekol Adept has been designed to handle the upcoming changes in regulations that have been implemented, and it's Defra exempt and ClearSkies rated, which means that you can use it with approved fuels, as long as you follow the guidelines. It's a powerful, durable burner with a 10-year Body Warranty and a strong construction. Its heating capabilities are also impressive.
2. Arada Holborn 5 Widescreen
Wood burning stoves are still extremely popular, and despite the directive maze that is surrounding them and their use, they're going to stay. In fact, some advocacy groups are calling for tighter restrictions and even a ban on log burners, so it's worth taking a look at our guide to stove pollution and regulations before you shop for new log fires or a multifuel burner.
One company that is doing its bit to keep the popularity of woodburners up is Arada Stoves, who have recently released a widescreen version of their popular Holborn 5 Multifuel/Wood Burning stove. It's a DEFRA approved, SIA 2022 Ecodesign Ready woodburner with a large glass door that gives an amazing flame image. It also has an airwash system which prevents the accumulation of soot.
This stove is easy to operate, and comes with a a heat output rating of 4.9kW. Its curved lines and classic style makes it a great choice for traditional or contemporary style. This model can be easily placed in smaller recesses due to its flat back design. It is also easy to install direct air systems with this model, which can increase the efficiency.
This stove also has a built-in ash dump, which makes it easy to remove ashes and clean them up regularly. This decreases the chance of dust and odours escaping the room. There's a choice of two flue adaptors (standard or pre-fabricated) depending on the type of chimney you have, and it's available with a remote control.
Wood-burning stoves can create a wonderful atmosphere in our homes, regardless of whether they're healthy for us. It's important to consider the health effects of indoor pollution and particulate matter. If you're planning to have a woodburner installed it is recommended that you shut the door when not tending the fire. Also, you should regularly clean the stove to ensure that the air is as clean as is possible.
3. Go Eco 5kW Plus
It's relaxing watching the flames flicker, and it can help reduce blood pressure. However, it's not without its problems though, research has found that older stoves can cause a lot of harm as they produce tiny soot particles that can get in your breathing system. New regulations are in place to ensure that log stoves have higher standards. This will reduce smoke leakage, creosote accumulation and more importantly, harmful gases like carbon monoxide.
New woodburners must be in compliance with a new standard and this is where the Go Eco 5kW Plus stands out, this multi-fuel stove not only meets, but surpasses the new standards. The stove has a widescreen viewing glass that allows you to see the flames clearly. It is also kept clean thanks to a powerful air washing system. This stove has an impressive efficiency rating of 80. It's DEFRA exempt, meaning that it can be used in smoke controlled areas. It is also SIA Ecodesign-ready, meaning it already meets European emissions restrictions for wood-burning stoves that will be in effect in 2022.
As if that weren't enough, the stove comes with an air venting kit for free making it much easier than ever before to set up. It's a robust little appliance, that has been built using high-quality steel. The finish is a classic matte black. It's easy-to-clean as the body has been sprayed with an enamel that repels dirt.
The clearSkies label on this stove demonstrates that it has been independently tested and confirmed to be eco-friendly and efficient, this is above and above the basic requirements laid out by Ecodesign. This is one of one stove on our list to have the five-star clearSkies rating.
4. Chilli Penguin Defrost
A feisty Welsh brand, Chilli Penguin has become a big player among wood burner brands with a maverick flair that is not to be missed. Chilli Penguin is known for its small multi-fuel stoves with a wide range of options and sizes. This 4.7kW model is an excellent illustration of their brand's focus and demonstrates their ability to provide a top-quality product at the price that's not too expensive. This DEFRA-approved woodburner can be used for use in Smoke Control Areas, and is fully conforms to the current emissions limit of 5g/hr. It also has ClearSkies level five certification. It is a great option for those who are not sure where the directive is heading and want to rest assured that their fireplace will continue to be exempt from smoke control regulations.
