The battery can be replaced with a flathead screwdriver pry bar made of plastic, or other small tools. Locate the small slot that houses the backup or emergency ignition key made of steel. Place the blade of your screwdriver or pry bar tool into the slot and gently open the back of the fob that holds the key. Once you have opened the fob, you can locate and remove the CR 2032 3V battery. Place a new battery in its place, and connect the fob.

Note: Certain older Volvo models use an entirely different type of battery that is the CR2025. CR2025 batteries are 7 10ths of a millimeter smaller than a CR2032 battery, which means you must be aware of the location of your replacement.

When you insert the key fob into the ignition barrel a transponder chip reads the code and compares it to the one that is stored in the start inhibitor module of your car. If the codes do not coincide, your vehicle will not start. This is a vital anti-theft feature that prevents your Volvo car from starting if you select the wrong key.
