Three Interactions, One Bar

Electronic music wafted through the bar, bleeding out of the open doors onto the busy main street. Inside, the exposed brick walls stood in stark contrast to the white bar and its gleaming copper accents. Over head, copper cross-flow fans rotated in a slow dance affixed to the ceiling. Candles at each table lit the room with a glowing, seductive ambiance.
At a table near the door, a couple sat across from one another, their rum drinks untouched. The man avoided looking at the woman as he talked on the phone. His face became more animated as the conversation continued, and eventually, his hands joined into the emotion. As he leaned over the table, she sunk back into her chair, arms crossed. Her feet practically tapped in impatience on the stone tiled floor.
At the bar, a man with a long red beard talked to a couple in their thirties. At the end of each sentence, he pulled down on his beard in punctuation. The bartender brought over drinks for the trio, and as the thirty-something man pulled out his wallet to cover the tab, the bearded man shooed it away. The woman smiled in gratitude.
The bartenders looked like they belonged to a Carribean-inspired troupe of musicians in their matching flowered and fruited shirts. The tallest of the four leaned over the bar, talking to a young woman in a red, backless dress. He drank her words and floated on her batting, false eyelashes.
Prompt: Write three paragraphs about a restaurant or bar. In one paragraph, describe a loner’s looks and behavior. In another, a couple’s looks and interaction. In a third, explain how a waiter or bartender communicates with the customers. From Fiction Writer’s Workshop Second Edition.
