To Solve the Problems Facing America, We’ve Got to Stop Ignoring Them
herren uhr

I am imagining a house with a serious mold problem. The people living there decide to ignore it. They paint over it without addressing the problem. The mold is still there and still unhealthy, though it is now better concealed. They go on with their lives.
Why would anybody do this? They love their house, and they have invested a great deal in it. From the outside, it looks fantastic. The neighbors envy it. The homeowners are reluctant to admit that there is a problem. They want to continue believing it is a great house. They want everyone else to continue believing it is a great house too. This makes them feel good, and they cling to it even as their health declines from the mold.
Ignoring a problem like this does not make it go away. In fact, ignoring a problem like this guarantees that it will become much worse. A problem that might have once been solvable soon balloons out of control. They could have fixed it and preserved their house. They chose not to, and now they are risking their health as well as their home.
American Mold I have a request as the 4th of July holiday approaches. I’d like you to think about the many problems we in the United States have been ignoring. Some go back to the beginning. Slavery and the genocidal campaign against Native Americans come to mind. These may seem like ancient history, but they continue to shape daily life for many of our neighbors. Racism is a problem we do our best to ignore even as it continues to do harm.
Other problems are more recent but have still been with us for well over 50 years. Consider the role of fossil fuels in climate change. Scientists have been warning us about this for some time. We ignored them because we were unwilling to make the sacrifices necessary. Like the mold, ignoring climate change has not improved our plight.
Consider income inequality and poverty. Reflect on how we stand alone in our refusal to provide universal healthcare to our citizens. We see what these things do to people but look the other way. Some even claim they are “blessed” because they aren’t suffering like their neighbor! We cling to our “rugged individualism” even…
