What is a Guzheng?
We combine the important fundamentals with the music YOU want to play. With all of the teachers at Castro Valley School of Music, you are sure to find the best match for YOU. All our guzhengs are 21-string instruments, and come with bridges, installed strings, a guzheng chromatic tuner, a tuning wrench, a soft case, stands and a manual. (Stands are not included with certain 49" travel-size guzheng.) All our guzheng instruments come with 1-year warranty. Other than the specified travel sizes, all are standard 64" or 163cm full-size instruments. You can choose to buy them either online or borrow them to get photocopied.
When it comes to playing the guzheng, there are multiple techniques. Depending on the musician, they may perform basic plucking actions on the right side while pressing on the left side. At first, this is what I thought of the guzheng, an instrument of Chinese heritage with a lifetime of more than 2,500 years, also known as the zheng or Chinese zither. Lui Tsz Guzheng Melbourne Yan has started learning pipa under the teaching of Li Ping at the Music Office at the age of 8. She is now majoring pipa at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts under the guidance of Zhang Ying. In 2013, she was admitted to the Music Department of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Academy of Arts as the first major of Chinese instrumental music.

Most guzheng music is composed for instruments with less strings. Most pieces don't require simultaneous access to all parts of even a 21-stringed instrument's range. And some of my students were admitted to the conservatory of Music. Guzheng lessons at Capen Music Academy are structured to provide a comprehensive music education to make you not only a better guzheng player but a better musician. Our guzheng lessons include basic theory, ear training, sight reading, technique, and history.

Classes are in groups of 3-4 people, closely matched in age. Our Academy curriculum includes, ear training, sight reading, various techniques, music theory and performance practices. Lessons are tailored to that of the student's individual learning pace and interests.
Ping Jiang will be the main teacher for all junior group classes. She follows the academic exam book from the China Central Conservatorium of Music with popular music included as extra curriculum. These classes will involve regular practise sessions and rehearsals for community performances. Our team of tertiary educated pianists have a lifelong passion and dedication for piano.

We offer in-person and online guzheng lessons for all ages at the rate of $60/hr. You do not need to have any musical background to take up Guzheng lessons. Our teachers will lead you to building a good grounding so as to take your Guzheng playing to higher levels.
