60 seconds, 60 minutes, 60 years. All of these measurements are are fixed. 60 seconds is 60 seconds. 60 minutes is 60 minutes. 60 years is 60 years. No matter how you look at time, it’s fixed.
No one would argue that 60 minutes is 45 minutes, but the perception of time changes everything. 60 minutes of surfing with friends may seem like 15 minutes. 60 minutes sitting in geometry class may seem like 360 minutes. Why is that?
The body and mind reacts to time differently despite the fact that each period is fixed in length. Does the length matter or does the perception of the length matter? Is a 60 year life spent surfing with friends actually a 20 year life? Would a 60 year life spent studying geometry seem like 360 years?
If you assume an individual can’t adjust their physical longevity, should one try to elongate their life through increased mental longevity? Is a 360 year life spent doing geometry more fulfilling than a 20 year life surfing with friends? The answer would seem obvious, but it may depend on your perspective.
Does the perception of time change throughout a life? Would a life spent surfing with friends start by flying by and then slow down throughout your life? Is doing something you love for your entire life actually the wrong advice? Would it be smarter to alternate between surfing and geometry to ensure a life well lived?
The question of time always take time.
