Sedimentary rock is formed from sediment and debris, including particles of sand, pebbles, shells, bones, and pieces of other rock.
Over a long period of time, the sediment and debris settles and creates layers. The lower layers become compacted and cemented together from the massive weight of the layers above them.
Sedimentary rock often contains visible pieces of the sediment and debris that formed it and is the only type of rock that may contain fossils.
Examples: limestone, shale, and sandstone
Metamorphic rock is formed under the Earth's surface when igneous or sedimentary rock is exposed to intense heat and pressure. This heat and pressure may change the mineral composition and texture of the rock, transforming it into new rock.
Metamorphic rock will often have layering and shiny crystals.
Examples: marble, gneiss, and slate
Igneous rock is formed by the melting and cooling of magma or lava.
Inside of Earth, magma slowly cools, creating rock with an irregular or rough texture and large crystals. Magma cooling inside Earth creates intrusive igneous rock.
Outside of Earth, lava cools very quickly, creating rock with a fine, grainy look or texture and small crystals. Lava cooling outside of Earth creates extrusive igneous rock.
