New Year’s Eve in Madrid draws thousands to the city centre for a street party known as Nochevieja. Translated as “Gate of the Sun,” Puerta del Sol is Madrid’s lively central square and main crossroads. As the clock strikes midnight, crowds gather to ring in the New Year with live entertainment and ritual grape eating. Those who finish a bunch of 12 grapes before the final toll are reportedly guaranteed good luck in the coming year.
