The mechanical properties of the impacted specimen followed a linear function of strain rate ranging from 10 to 17 s-1; at the higher strain rates of about 49-67 s-1, the linear functions disappeared. The elastic modulus of the specimen was independent of the strain rate, but it was dependent on the correlation between the elastic moduli of the SMA fibers and the mortar matrix. This work applies a procedure for analysis and characterization of the surface of brake friction materials, correlating them with the tribological and thermal properties achieved in different vehicle braking conditions. Experiments were performed in a vehicle under two real conditions of braking operation, simulated flat track descent and emergency braking. Characteristics of the plates formed on the surfaces of the friction materials were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and correlated with the performance during braking, as measured by the coefficient of friction at the interface of the friction pair and temperature. As a result, the formation of the primary and secondary plateaus in these two different braking operating conditions was observed, and the relationship between the characteristics of the plateaus formed on the surface and the surface roughness parameters and performance measurements during braking. To describe the molecular electronic structure of nucleic acid bases and other heterocycles, we employ the Linear Combination of Atomic Orbitals (LCAO) method, considering the molecular wave function as a linear combination of all valence orbitals, i.e., 2s, 2px, 2py, 2pz orbitals for C, N, and O atoms and 1s orbital for H atoms. Regarding the diagonal matrix elements (also known as on-site energies), we introduce a novel parameterization. For the non-diagonal matrix elements referring to neighboring atoms, we employ the Slater-Koster two-center interaction transfer integrals. We use Harrison-type expressions with factors slightly modified relative to the original. We compare our LCAO predictions for the ionization and excitation energies of heterocycles with those obtained from Ionization Potential Equation of Motion Coupled Cluster with Singles and Doubles (IP-EOMCCSD)/aug-cc-pVDZ level of theory and Completely Normalized Equation of Motion Coupled Cluster with Singles, Doubles, and non-iterative Triples (CR-EOMCCSD(T))/aug-cc-pVDZ level of theory, respectively, (vertical values), as well as with available experimental data. Similarly, we calculate the transfer integrals between subsequent base pairs, to be used for a Tight-Binding (TB) wire model description of charge transfer and transport along ideal or deformed B-DNA. Taking into account all valence orbitals, we are in the position to treat deflection from the planar geometry, e.g., DNA structural variability, a task impossible for the plane Hückel approach (i.e., using only 2pz orbitals). We show the effects of structural deformations utilizing a 20mer evolved by Molecular Dynamics. As a typical thermochromic material, VO2 coatings can be applied to smart windows by modulating the transmission of near infrared (NIR) light via phase transition. However, the inherent undesirable luminous transmittance (Tlum) and solar modulation efficiency (ΔTsol) of pure VO2 impede its practical application. In order to solve this problem, the porous VO2 based composite film was prepared by magnetron sputtering and subsequent acid solution process with Zn2V2O7 particles used as a sacrificial template to create pores, which showed excellent Tlum (72.1%) and enhanced ΔTsol (10.7%) compared with pure VO2 film. It was demonstrated that the porous structure of the film caused by acid solution process could improve the Tlum obviously and the isolated VO2 nanoparticles presented strong localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effects to enhance the ΔTsol. Therefore, this method will provide a facile way to prepare VO2 based films with excellent thermochromic performance and thus promote the application of the VO2 based films in smart windows.A numerical-analytical approach to the problem of determining the stress-strain state of bimaterial structures with interphase ribbon-like deformable inhomogeneities under combined force and dislocation loading has been proposed. The possibility of delamination along a part of the interface between the inclusion and the matrix, where sliding with dry friction occurs, is envisaged. A structurally modular method of jump functions is constructed to solve the problems arising when nonlinear geometrical or physical properties of a thin inclusion are taken into account. A complete system of equations is constructed to determine the unknowns of the problem. The condition for the appearance of slip zones at the inclusion-matrix interface is formulated. A convergent iterative algorithm for analytical and numerical determination of the friction-slip zones is developed. The influence of loading parameters and the friction coefficient on the development of these zones is investigated.Clear aligner technology has become the preferred choice of orthodontic treatment for malocclusions for most adult patients due to their esthetic appeal and comfortability. However, limitations exist for aligner technology, such as corrections involving complex force systems. Composite attachments on the tooth surface are intended to enable active control of tooth movements. However, unintended tooth movements still occur. In this study, we present an effective attachment design of an attachment that can efficiently induce tooth movement by comparing and analyzing the movement and rotation of teeth between a general attachment and an overhanging attachment. The 3D finite element modes were constructed from CBCT data and used to analyze the distal displacement of the central incisor using 0.5- and 0.75-mm-thick aligners without an attachment, and with general and overhanging attachments. The results show that the aligner with the overhanging attachment can effectively reduce crown tipping and prevent axial rotation for an intended distal displacement of the central incisor. selleck compound In all models, an aligner with or without attachments was not capable of preventing the lingual inclination of the tooth.Additive manufacturing technologies based on metal are evolving into an essential advanced manufacturing tool for constructing prototypes and parts that can lead to complex structures, dissimilar metal-based structures that cannot be constructed using conventional metallurgical techniques. Unlike traditional manufacturing processes, the metal AM processes are unreliable due to variable process parameters and a lack of conventionally acceptable evaluation methods. A thorough understanding of various diagnostic techniques is essential to improve the quality of additively manufactured products and provide reliable feedback on the manufacturing processes for improving the quality of the products. This review summarizes and discusses various ex-situ inspections and in-situ monitoring methods, including electron-based methods, thermal methods, acoustic methods, laser breakdown, and mechanical methods, for metal additive manufacturing. With the recent significant advances in micro- and nanoscale fabrication techniques, deposition of diamond-like carbon films on stainless steel substrates has been experimentally achieved. However, the underlying mechanism for the formation of film microstructures has remained elusive. In this study, the growth processes of diamond-like carbon films on AISI 316L substrate are studied via the molecular dynamics method. Effects of substrate bias voltage on the structure properties and sp3 hybridization ratio are investigated. A diamond-like carbon film with a compact structure and smooth surface is obtained at 120 V bias voltage. Looser structures with high surface roughness are observed in films deposited under bias voltages of 0 V or 300 V. In addition, sp3 fraction increases with increasing substrate bias voltage from 0 V to 120 V, while an opposite trend is obtained when the bias voltage is further increased from 120 V to 300 V. The highest magnitude of sp3 fraction was about 48.5% at 120 V bias voltage. The dependence of sp3 fraction in carbon films on the substrate bias voltage achieves a high consistency within the experiment results. The mechanism for the dependence of diamond-like carbon structures on the substrate bias voltage is discussed as well.In the present work, the localized corrosion and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) behaviors of a commercial 6005A-T6 aluminum extrusion profile was studied comprehensively. The velocity of crack growth in self-stressed double-cantilever beam (DCB) specimens under constant displacement was estimated, which also provides insight into the local microstructure evolutions at the crack tips caused by the localized pitting corrosion, intergranular corrosion (IGC), and intergranular SCC. Characterizations of local corrosion along the cracking path for a period of exposure to 3.5% NaCl were revealed via optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The typical features of the pits dominated by the distribution of precipitates included the peripheral dissolution of the Al matrix, channeling corrosion, intergranular attack, and large pits in the grains. The discontinuous cracking at the crack tips indicated the hydrogen-embrittlement-mediated mechanism. Moreover, the local regions enriched with Mg2Si and Mg5Si6 phases and with low-angle grain boundaries presented better SCC resistance than those of the matrix with high-angle grain boundaries, supporting a strategy to develop advanced Al-Mg-Si alloys via interfacial engineering. The measurement of any physical property as a function of temperature brings the method used into the realm of thermal analysis [...].Piezoelectricity is the ability of certain crystals to generate mechanical strain proportional to an external electric field. Though many biomolecular crystals contain polar molecules, they are frequently centrosymmetric, signifying that the dipole moments of constituent molecules cancel each other. However, piezoelectricity can be induced by stereospecific doping leading to symmetry reduction. Here, we applied piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM), highly sensitive to local piezoelectricity, to characterize (01¯0) faces of a popular biomolecular material, α-glycine, doped with other amino acids such as L-alanine and L-threonine as well as co-doped with both. We show that, while apparent vertical piezoresponse is prone to parasitic electrostatic effects, shear piezoelectric activity is strongly affected by doping. Undoped α-glycine shows no shear piezoelectric response at all. The shear response of the L-alanine doped crystals is much larger than those of the L-threonine doped crystals and co-doped crystals. These observations are rationalized in terms of host-guest molecule interactions. The development of novel biomaterials based on plant extracts is expected to boost yields without adversely affecting environmental diversity. The potential biostimulating effects have so far been underreported. The assessment of the stimulating effect of botanical biomaterials is essential in the cultivation of economically-important crops. An attempt was undertaken in this study to develop a new biostimulating material in the form of granules, based on an extract from the roots of Arctium lappa L. The scope of the research included the characterization of the new material and the identification of its biostimulating potential. The designed and produced biogranulate is rich in bioactive compounds, including polyphenolic compounds, carbohydrates, and micro- and macro-elements. The analysis of the physicochemical properties of the biomaterial has shown that it had the features of intelligent biopreparations, i.e., slow-release preparations, at the pH appropriate for legume plants. Thus, knowledge about the design of new biomaterials is a milestone in the practical development of new perspectives for enhancing sustainability in agriculture.
