Given the lack of a comprehensive understanding of the complex metabolism and variable exposure environment, carbon particles in macrophages have become a potentially valuable biomarker to assess the exposure level of atmospheric particles, such as black carbon. However, the tedious and subjective quantification method limits the application of carbon particles as a valid biomarker. Aiming to obtain an accurate carbon particles quantification method, the deep learning and binarization algorithm were implemented to develop a quantitative tool for carbon content in airway macrophage (CCAM), named PyCoCa. Two types of macrophages, normal and foamy appearance, were applied for the development of PyCoCa. In comparison with the traditional methods, PyCoCa significantly improves the identification efficiency for over 100 times. Consistency assessment with the gold standard revealed that PyCoCa exhibits outstanding prediction ability with the Interclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) values of over 0.80. And a proper fresh dye will enhance the performance of PyCoCa (ICC = 0.89). Subsequent sensitivity analysis confirmed an excellent performance regarding accuracy and robustness of PyCoCa under high/low exposure environments (sensitivity > 0.80). Furthermore, a successful application of our quantitative tool in cohort studies indicates that carbon particles induce macrophage foaming and the foaming decrease the carbon particles internalization in reverse. Our present study provides a robust and efficient tool to accurately quantify the carbon particles loading in macrophage for exposure assessment.Phosphogypsum (PG) samples from four distinct sources in the Southeastern US were analyzed to explore the variation in total metal content between newly generated (fresh) PG and PG disposed of in phosphogypsum stacks for different lengths of time (stack). Fresh PG exhibited greater total metal concentrations relative to stack PG, including those identified in the literature as important from a risk assessment perspective (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn). The pH varied between fresh and stack PG, with some stack samples exhibiting lower pH than fresh samples, however the relationship between pH and age of sample was not linear. Stack samples with pH values similar to fresh samples possessed lower concentrations of total inorganic metals than fresh samples suggesting that process water drainage and stack location play an important role in the reusability of PG as they can affect the pH of stack PG and total inorganic metal concentrations. Overall observations show that stacking PG for three or more years prior to beneficial reuse provides a construction material with lower total metal concentrations than fresh PG.Previous studies have shown that anaerobic digestion of food waste can be enhanced by addition of conductive materials that stimulate direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) between bacteria and methanogens. However, at extremely high organic loading rates (OLRs), volatile fatty acids (VFAs) still tend to accumulate even in the presence of conductive materials because of an imbalance between the formation of fermentation products and the rate of methanogenesis. In this study, granular activated carbon (GAC) immobilized with riboflavin (GAC-riboflavin) was added to an anaerobic digester treating food waste. The GAC-riboflavin reactor operated stably at OLRs as high as 11.5 kgCOD/ (m3·d) and kept VFA concentrations below 69.4 mM, COD removal efficiencies, methane production rates, and biogas methane concentrations were much higher in the GAC-riboflavin reactor than the GAC- and non-amended reactors. Transcripts associated with genes that code for proteins involved in DIET based metabolism were somewhat more highly expressed by Methanothrix in the GAC-riboflavin reactor. However, it is unlikely that riboflavin acted as an electron shuttle to stimulate DIET. Rather, it seemed to provide nutrients that enhanced the growth of microorganisms involved in the anaerobic digestion process, including those that are capable of DIET.Increased suspended sediment concentrations (SSC) are a major stressor across aquatic habitats. Here, the literature was synthesized to show that animal responses to increases in relative SSC (test concentration/natural background concentration) were similar in type and negative across different shallow-water (marine, estuarine, freshwater) habitats. Further, animal sensitivities are similar across habitats based on relative SSC and occur starting at low relative SSC increases in all habitats despite differences in natural background SSC. Based upon these similarities in relative SSC sensitivities, deep-sea sensitivity values for acute exposure to increased SSC, where empirical data are almost non-existent, were estimated. Because of the low natural SSC in deep sea environments, very small increases in absolute SSC could result in acute effects. How the methods and results can be used to inform regulatory thresholds are discussed. Because of the large variability in shallow water datasets and differences between deep-sea and shallow-water habitats, deep-sea specific data are needed to verify the estimates and improve their precision. Following the precautionary principle and the results presented here, it is recommended that the threshold for acute plume impacts is set very close to natural background levels.

Based on a repeated measurement panel study, we explored the association of short-term PM exposure with lung function in ARC patients and to further identify the susceptible populations.

The main objective of this review is to discuss the influence of the human population on the concentration, distribution and biological effects of PPCPs across the Antarctic coastal marine ecosystem. We carried out a review of the scientific articles published for PPCPs in Antarctic, supported by the information of the Antarctic stations reported by Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs (CONMAP), Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) and Secretariat of the Antarctic Treaty (ATS). In addition, spatial data regarding the Antarctic continent was obtained from Quantarctica. Antarctic concentrations of PPCPs were more reflective of the treatment system used by research stations as opposed to the infrastructure built or the annual occupancy by station. The main problem is that most of the research stations lack tertiary treatment, resulting in elevated concentrations of PPCPs in effluents. Furthermore, the geographic distribution of Antarctic field stations in coastal areas allows for the release of PPCPs, directly into the sea, a practice that remains in compliance with the current Protocol. After their release, PPCPs can become incorporated into sea ice, which can then act as a chemical reservoir. In addition, there is no clarity on the effects on the local biota. Finally, we recommend regulating the entry and use of PPCPs in Antarctica given the difficulties of operating, and in some cases the complete absence of appropriate treatment systems. Further studies are needed on the fate, transport and biological effects of PPCPs on the Antarctic biota. It is recommended that research efforts be carried out in areas inhabited by humans to generate mitigation measures relative to potential adverse impacts. Tourism should be also considered in further studies due the temporal release of PPCPs.Spatial variations in sulfur (S) and nitrogen (N) deposition have changed in East and Southeast Asia in recent decades. Nevertheless, in this region, including the tropics, regional-scale assessments of the long-term risk of acidification and eutrophication (N saturation) for terrestrial ecosystems using a critical load approach have not been updated since 2001. To evaluate future risks, maps of critical loads and exceedances were updated using recently acquired spatial datasets of soil properties, soil minerals, climate, tree plantations, and the annual S and N depositions estimated using the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model. The resulting maps were verified using data on long-term trends in soil pH and nitrate concentration in surface water acquired by the Acid Deposition Monitoring Network in East Asia (EANET). It was found that N deposition exceeded the critical load for eutrophication not only in East Asia but also in some parts of the tropical monsoon and humid regions in Southeast Asia, whereas S deposition partly exceeded the critical load for soil acidification in China and small parts of the tropical monsoon region. The high-risk areas for eutrophication coincided well with the EANET sites, where the increase in nitrate concentration in the surface water was significant over the last 20 years. Hence, the estimated map of the critical load exceedance for eutrophication is more plausible for assessing the risk in East and Southeast Asia than that for acidification, although the critical load exceedance for acidification would be sufficiently significant as an updated risk map based on the latest input values. This update also suggests that increased N deposition around megacities, water discharge, and tree plantations may play an important role in the spatial variability of eutrophication risks in the tropics of Southeast Asia.The literature is currently lacking effect-based monitoring studies targeted at evaluating the performance of full-scale membrane bioreactor plants. In this research, a monitoring campaign was performed at a full-scale wastewater treatment facility with two parallel lines (traditional activated sludge and membrane bioreactor). Beside the standard parameters (COD, nitrogen, phosphorus, and metals), 6 polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, 29 insecticides, 2 herbicides, and 3 endocrine disrupting compounds were measured. A multi-tiered battery of bioassays complemented the investigation, targeting different toxic modes of action and employing various biological systems (uni/multicellular, prokaryotes/eukaryotes, trophic level occupation). A traffic light scoring approach was proposed to quickly visualize the impact of treatment on overall toxicity that occurred after the exposure to raw and concentrated wastewater. Analysis of the effluents of the CAS and MBR lines show very good performance of the two systems for removal of organic micropollutants and metals.
