We reviewed 558 cases of radical nephrectomy. Postoperative AKI was defined by the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) serum creatinine criteria. Values of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) were collected up to 36 months (median 35 months) after surgery. The primary outcome was new-onset chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage 3a or higher or all-cause mortality within three years after nephrectomy. The functional change ratio (FCR) of eGFR was defined as the ratio of the most recent GFR (24-36 months after surgery) to the new baseline during 3-12 months. A multivariable Cox proportional hazard regression analysis for new-onset CKD and a multivariable linear regression analysis for FCR were performed to evaluate the association between AKI and long-term renal outcomes. A correlation analysis was performed with the serum creatinine ratio and used to determine AKI and FCR. AKI occurred in 43.2% (n = 241/558) and our primary outcome developed in 40.5% (n = 226/558) of patients. The incidence of new-onset CKD was significantly higher in patients with AKI than those without at all follow-up time points after surgery. The Cox regression analysis showed a graded association between AKI and our primary outcome (AKI stage 1 Hazard ratio 1.71, 95% confidence interval 1.25-2.32; AKI stage 2 or 3 Hazard ratio 2.72, 95% confidence interval 1.78-4.10). The linear regression analysis for FCR showed that AKI was significantly associated with FCR (β = -0.168 ± 0.322, p = 0.011). There was a significant negative correlation between the serum creatinine ratio and FCR. In conclusion, our analysis demonstrated a robust and graded association between AKI after radical nephrectomy and long-term renal functional deterioration.Progression of actinic keratosis (AK) to cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is rare. Most cases of AK remain as intraepidermal lesions, owing to the suppression of the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Ovo-like transcriptional repressor 1 (OVOL1) and ovo-like zinc finger 2 (OVOL2) are important modulators of EMT in some tumors, but their roles in skin tumors remain elusive. This study elucidated the roles of OVOL1/2 in AK and cSCC using 30 AK/30 cSCC clinical samples, and an A431 human SCC cell line using immunohistochemistry and molecular biological approaches. Immunohistochemically, OVOL1/2 were upregulated in AK and downregulated in cSCC. Meanwhile, EMT-related factors, vimentin and zinc finger E-box binding homeobox 1 (ZEB1) were downregulated in AK and upregulated in cSCC. Moreover, ZEB1 expression was higher in tumors in which OVOL2 expression was low. Thus, we observed an inverse association between OVOL2 and ZEB1 expression in AK and cSCC. Although knockdown of OVOL1 or OVOL2 increased the mRNA and protein levels of ZEB1, only OVOL2 knockdown increased the invasive ability of A431. In conclusion, OVOL2 inhibits ZEB1 expression and may inhibit the promotion of AK into cSCC. This study used 2010 census block group data and objectively measured natural environment data derived from GIS in Austin, Texas. Comparison t-tests and ordinal least square regressions were conducted as statistical analyses. The t-tests showed that low-income neighborhoods were more socioeconomically disadvantaged and had less greenery than high-income neighborhoods. The final regression models showed that neighborhood greenery had a negative relationship with outdoor crimes for low-income neighborhoods but a positive relationship with crimes for high-income neighborhoods. The migration of MSM not only poses difficulties for government departments charged with treating the disease, but also increases the spread of HIV in geographical space, so it is important to understand the geographical distribution and migrant patterns of MSM. We searched the largest dating website in China to obtain open information from all users in the Chinese mainland from January 2006 to August 2017. For the analysis, the datasets were merged according to units of time and administrative regions. In total, 1,356,609 records were obtained for this study. The main users of the website were single males aged 18-35 years old. Most of the users were located in the large and mid-sized cities of East China. The distribution of MSM was strongly associated with the distribution of the development of service industry in geographical space. The main flow of MSM are mainly located inside the province as internal flow. For those MSM who prefer to migrate to other provinces, the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area, the Yangtze River Delta, the Pearl River Delta, and Sichuan and Chongqing area were their primary destinations. The aim of this study was to assess the impact on resources (land, water, and energy) use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of healthy dietary patterns in a sample of Italian adults. METHODS Participants (n = 1806) were recruited through random sampling in the city of Catania, southern Italy. Dietary consumption was assessed through a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ); dietary patterns were calculated through dietary scores. The specific environmental footprints of food item production/processing were obtained from various available life-cycle assessments; a sustainability score was created based on the impact of the four environmental components calculated. RESULTS The contribution of major food groups to the environmental footprint showed that animal products (dairy, egg, meat, and fish) represented more than half of the impact on GHG emissions and energy requirements; meat products were the stronger contributors to GHG emissions and water use, while dairy products to energy use, and cereals to land use. All patterns investigated, with the exception of the Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension (DASH), were linearly associated with the sustainability score. Among the components, higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet and Alternate Diet Quality Index (AHEI) was associated with lower GHG emissions, dietary quality index-international (DQI-I) with land use, while Nordic diet with land and water use. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, the adoption of healthy dietary patterns involves less use of natural resources and GHG emissions, representing eco-friendlier options in Italian adults.Road trauma is a significant health problem in rural and remote regions of Australia, particularly for Indigenous communities. This study aims to identify and compare the circumstances leading to (proximal causation) and social determinants of (distal causation) crashes of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in these regions and their relation to remoteness. This is a topic seriously under-researched in Australia. Modelled on an earlier study, 229 persons injured in crashes were recruited from local health facilities in rural and remote North Queensland and interviewed, mainly by telephone, according to a fixed protocol which included a detailed narrative of the circumstances of the crash. A qualitative analysis of these narratives identified several core themes, further explored statistically in this sample, supplemented by participants in the earlier study with compatible questionnaire data, designed to determine which factors were more closely associated with Indigenous status and which with remoteness. Indigenous participants were less often vehicle controllers, more likely to have recently been a drink driver or passenger thereof; to be unemployed, unlicensed, distracted or fatigued before the crash, alcohol dependent and have lower perceived social, but not personal, locus of control in a traffic crash than non-Indigenous persons. Differences between Indigenous and non-Indigenous participants are largely ascribable to hardship and transport disadvantage due to lack of access to licensing and associated limitations on employment opportunities. Based on these findings, a number of policy recommendations relating to educational, enforcement and engineering issues have been made.In school age children and adolescents, anemia might cause lower cognitive function and attention span, which in turn could diminish human capital accumulation. As children born in low-income households are more likely to be anemic, this may prevent many individuals from overcoming the intergenerational poverty traps. In this paper, we used data from the Mexican National Health and Nutrition Survey 2012 and focused on a sample of adolescents between 12 and 19 years of age to study the relationship between attending school without delay-our proxy for school performance-and anemia. We found a statistically significant association between the two variables. If this relationship is causal, the economic burden linked to the loss of school years could well exceed the costs associated with programs aimed at reducing the prevalence of anemia in vulnerable populations. Our results provide additional support to the existing literature on anemia as a significant barrier to school achievement.
