Findings also highlight how crucial environmental education and direct contact with the object of study are for securing support and buy-in for flood protection measures. This work is original in that it considers the different types of management for a habitat as NbS and the heterogeneity of preferences within a population. Results are significant in providing a basis for future NbS developments and in supporting flood risk policy and management.Conflict management in PAs (Protected Areas) is becoming increasingly important in the context of the rapid development of nature-based tourism. Literature proposes the Index of Conflict tendency between Tourism development and ecological Protection (ICTP) to analyze the tendency of conflict from a spatial perspective, but this index does not consider the factor of seasonality which is important in tourism. The current study considers seasonality and proposes the CVD (Coverage- Variation- Duration) framework to conduct a spatio-temporal analysis of the ICTP. The applied research based on the case of China's V-PAs (a specific category of PAs) reflects that the CVD framework can describe the spatial distribution of the ICTP from a seasonal perspective. The study finds that, among V-PAs in China, 42.16% of the areas with high ICTP of V-PAs have obvious seasonal variations, which shows that PAs conflict management must incorporate the factor of seasonality. The study also shows that 8.98% of V-PAs have large-scale coverage of areas with high ICTP, revealing priorities for conflict management. 3.96% of V-PAs have large-scale coverage of areas with high ICTP showing seasonal changes. Management in these areas should pay attention to seasonal changes to become more effective. The CVD framework proposed in this paper is operable and extendable and can provide analytical tools for PAs conflict management, and promote ecological protection and more sustainable tourism development in PAs.The European Union is currently in the process of transformation toward a circular economy model in which different areas of activity should be integrated for more efficient management of raw materials and waste. The wastewater sector has a great potential in this regard and therefore is an important element of the transformation process to the circular economy model. The targets of the circular economy policy framework such as resource recovery are tightly connected with the wastewater treatment processes and sewage sludge management. With this in view, the present study aims to review existing indicators on resource recovery that can enable efficient monitoring of the sustainable and circular solutions implemented in the wastewater sector. Within the reviewed indicators, most of them were focused on technological aspects of resource recovery processes such as nutrient removal efficiency, sewage sludge processing methods and environmental aspects as the pollutant share in the sewage sludge or its ashes. Moreover, other wide-scope indicators such as the wastewater service coverage or the production of bio-based fertilizers and hydrochar within the wastewater sector were analyzed. The results were used for the development of recommendations for improving the resources recovery monitoring framework in the wastewater sector and a proposal of a circularity indicator for a wastewater treatment plant highlighting new challenges for further researches and wastewater professionals.A novel binder-free anthraquinone (AQS)/polyaniline (PANI) modified carbon felt (CF) cathode for selective H2O2 generation and efficient pollutant removal in electro-Fenton was fabricated by CV electro-deposition method. AQS, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst, was immobilized by the PANI film, which contributed to the obtained high stability of the AQS/PANI@CF cathode. The concentration of the electro-generated H2O2 on AQS/PANI@CF cathode (83.3 μmol L-1) was about 10 times higher than that of the bare CF cathode. And the high yield of H2O2 was attributed to the catalytic reduction of O2 by AQS to generate more superoxide radical (O2•-), which combined with H+ to form H2O2. Additionally, the rhodamine B (RhB) degradation efficiency reached 98.8% within 60 min with the AQS/PANI@CF served as the cathode with high stability and good repeatability. The main generated reactive radicals were determined by the quenching experiments and the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests. Besides, a plausible mechanism of the AQS/PANI@CF cathode applied electro-Fenton process was proposed. This work provided a reliable reference for the subsequent investigations of the binder-free cathode with high performance and stability. The histological structure of the avian pineal gland during embryonic life has so far only been studied in chickens. It is known that the pineal organs of hatched chickens and turkeys differ significantly from each other based on their morphology and physiology. The aim of the present study was to investigate the histological structure of the embryonic pineal gland of domestic turkeys. The study was performed on turkey embryos aged 4-28 days. Along with histological analyses, three-dimensional (3D) images of the pineal glands from embryos aged 6-28 days were also obtained. In four-day-old embryos [embryonic day (ED) 4], primary evagination of the pineal gland from the neuroectoderm of the diencephalon was observed. On ED 6, the evagination formed a pineal recess with a thick and folded wall. In the next embryonic stages, the pineal recess was lengthened to the pineal canal, with the lumen opening to the third ventricle. The connection of the pineal lumen with the ventricular lumen was observed in all studied to branched ones. The pineal capsule started to develop on ED 6, first as a vascularization and later as a thin mesenchymal outline around the apical part, then at the dorsal and at the end the ventral part of the pineal gland. The pineal stroma was composed of mesenchymal tissue consisting of abundant in cells and blood vessels. The first evagination of the choroid plexus in the diencephalon was observed on ED 8. The attachment of the pineal gland to the dura mater first occurred on ED 16. Finally, the pineal gland of ED 28 embryos consisted of a wide proximal part attached to the dura mater and a narrow distal part that extended into the pineal stalk, which extended to the intercommissural region of the diencephalon. The present study revealed the occurrence of significant morphological differences in the developing embryonic pineal gland of turkeys compared with chickens.Four different compositions of ZrB2-B4C composites (i.e., 5, 15, 20, 25 Wt. % of B4C) were fabricated by Spark Plasma Sintering Technique (SPS) at 2000 °C temperature. The composites were characterized by the evolution of physical and mechanical properties; X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis was also done for phase analysis of the composites. The relative density values were obtained in the range of 96.14-97.78 % of all the composites. The addition of B4C in ZrB2 matrix led to an enhancement in hardness (15.38 GPa at 5 wt.% B4C to 20.49 GPa at 25 wt.% B4C measured at 1.0 kgf load) and fracture toughness (from 2.93 MPa-m0.5 at 5 wt.% B4C to 4.13 MPa-m0.5 at 25 wt.% B4C measured at 1.0 kgf load). The composite samples were processed by wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) process with three different parameters set for the study of machining speed, surface roughness. The composite with 25 wt.% of B4C shows highest machining speed of 10.56 mm2/min. The average surface roughness (Ra) of the WEDM processed composite surfaces lies in the range of 1.26-5.64 μm.The concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn were measured in muscle tissue of Coryphaena hippurus captured in the southern Gulf of California to determine inter-annual variations and their relation with environmental parameters for the period 2006-2015; additionally, health risk to consumers was assessed according to levels of studied elements and rate of fish consumption in northwest Mexico. During 2014 and 2015 the levels of As, Cd, Cu, and Zn were significantly lower than the rest of the years; in the case of As, it was also significantly lower in 2010. Oceanic Niño Index was negatively correlated with Zn concentrations in fish, while sea surface temperature was negatively correlated with Zn, Pb and Cd concentrations in dolphinfish. The simultaneous occurrence of the analyzed elements in muscle of dolphinfish indicated that health effects on consumers are not likely to occur; nevertheless, fishermen with elevated fish consumption might be at risk. This study investigated the sublethal effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of DCOIT on the neotropical oyster Crassostrea brasiliana. Gills and digestive glands of animals exposed to increasing concentrations of DCOIT were analyzed for biochemical, cellular, and histopathological responses. Exposure to DCOIT (0.2 to 151 μg L-1) for 120 h triggered oxidative stress in both tissues (through the modulation of GPX, GST, GSH and GR), which led to damage of membrane lipids (increase of LPO and reduction of the NRRT). DCOIT increased histopathological pathologies in gills, such as necrosis, lymphocyte infiltration and epithelial desquamation. This study showed that short term exposure to environmental concentrations of DCOIT causes negative effects on C. brasiliana at biochemical, physiological, and histological levels. Therefore, the use of DCOIT as a booster biocide in antifouling paints should be further assessed, as it may cause environmental hazards to marine organisms.Microplastics are small plastic particles found ubiquitously in marine environments. U0126 In this study, a hybridized method was developed for the extraction of microplastics (45-1000 μm) from sediments using sodium bromide solution for density separation. Method development was tested using spiked microplastics as internal standards. The method was then used to extract microplastics from sediments in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, USA. Suspect microplastics were analyzed with Raman spectroscopy. Microplastic abundance ranged from 40 particles/100 g sediment to 4.6 million particles/100 g sediment (wet weight). Cellulose acetate fibers were the most abundant microplastic. These results are some of the first data for microplastics in Rhode Island sediments.Nowadays, people have known more about the distribution features on the surface of beaches. However, the understanding on the microplastics (Mps) distribution in the vertical direction on beaches is still lacking. This study analysed the vertical distribution of Mps from five beaches, with one long core [Shilaoren Beach (C1), 8 m] and four short cores [Aoshan Beach (C2); Liuqinghewan Beach (C3); Bathing Beach No. 3 (C4); and Golden Beach (C5); approximately 70 cm]. An increasing trend of Mps from bottom to top layers were observed with an average of 16.6 ± 4.8 Mps/25 g d.w. in C1. Conversely, a fluctuating trend was found in C2-C5, with an average Mps abundance on the 70 cm depth to be 6.7, 7.1, 11.1 and 7.0 Mps/25 g d.w., respectively. These Mps were mainly comprised of fibres (>98%) and few were fragments. Mps were not uniformly distributed within all cores, and this variation was due to changes in Mps sources, hydrodynamics and sedimentation process in the beach environment. Although the vertical accumulation of Mps is not as stable as the other sedimentary environments, it still presents the increasing trend in the 8-m core from the bottom to the top, which is consistent with the plastic production history in China since 1950.
