Second-growth forests (SGF) are critical components for limiting biodiversity loss and climate change mitigation. However, these forests were established after anthropic disturbances such as land use for planting, and in highly human-modified landscapes. These interventions can decrease the ability of biological communities to recover naturally, and it is necessary to understand how multiple drivers, from local scale to landscape scale influence the diversity and carbon stock of these forests in natural regeneration. For this, we used data from 37 SGF growing on areas previously used for eucalyptus plantations in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, after the last cut cycle. For each SGF, the forest tree species diversity was calculated based on the Hills number, and we also calculated the above-ground carbon stock. Then, we evaluated the influence of multiple environmental factors on these indexes soil properties, past-management intensity, patch configuration, and landscape composition. Little influence of soil properties was found, only soil fertility negatively influenced above-ground carbon stock. However, past-management intensity negatively influenced tree species diversity and carbon stock. The isolation of other forests and tree species propagules source distance (>500 ha) also negatively influenced the diversity of species. This is probably due to the favoring of tree pioneer species in highly human-modified landscapes because they are more tolerant of environmental changes, less dependent on animal dispersal, and have low carbon stock capacity. Thus, areas with higher past-management intensity and more isolated areas are less effective for passive restoration and may require intervention to recover tree diversity and carbon stock in the Atlantic Forest. The approach, which had not yet been applied in the Atlantic Forest, brought similar results to that found in other forests, and serves as a theoretical basis for choosing priority areas for passive restoration in the biome.The production of edible vegetable oils generates considerable amounts of energy-rich waste, which is usually not utilised fully. The digestates obtained from co-digestion proved to be excellent in the cress seeds growth test at digestate concentrations of 5-10 wt%, while higher concentrations had a toxic effect.Glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP) is a stable and persistent glycoprotein secreted by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi that plays an important role in sequestering soil organic carbon (SOC) and improving soil quality. Rapid urbanization disturbs and degrades the soil quality in the greenspace. However, few studies have investigated the effects of urbanization on GRSP and its influencing factors. This study selected impervious surface area as a measure of urbanization intensity. A total of 184 soil samples were collected from the 0-20 cm soil layer in the greenspace of Nanchang, China (505 km2). The GRSP content, soil properties, urban forest characteristics, and land-use configuration were determined. The total GRSP (TG) and easily extractable GRSP (EEG) contents were 2.38 and 0.57 mg g-1, respectively. TG and EEG decreased by 16.22% and 19.35%, respectively, from low to heavy urbanized areas. Moreover, SOC decreased from 39.9 to 1.4 mg g-1, while EEG/SOC and TG/SOC increased by approximately 17% and 34%, respectively, indicating the significant contribution of GRSP to the SOC pool. Pearson and redundancy analysis showed that GRSP was positively correlated with SOC, phosphorus, nitrogen, vegetation richness, and tree height, but negatively correlated with pH, bulk density, and impervious area. The partial least squares path model demonstrated that urbanization affected soil properties, forest characteristics, and land use factors, resulting in GRSP changes. This study clarifies the key factors of urbanization that affect GRSP and provides insight for urban greenspace soil improvement from the new perspective of enhancing the GRSP content.Since the 24-hr PM2.5 (particle aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 μm) concentration standard was regulated in Taiwan in 2012, the PM2.5 concentration has been decreasing year by year, but the ozone (O3) concentration remains almost the same. In particular, the daily maximum 8-hr average O3 (MDA8 O3) concentration frequently exceeds the standard. The goal of this study is to find a solution for reducing PM2.5 and O3 simultaneously by numerical modeling. After the Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCS)-limited and nitrogen oxides (NOX)-limited areas were defined in Taiwan, then, in total, 50 scenarios are simulated in this study. In terms of the average in Taiwan, the effect of VOCS emission reduction is better than that of NOX on the decrease in PM2.5 concentration, when the same reduction proportion (20%, 40%) is implemented. While the effect of further NOX emission reduction (60%) will exceed that of VOCS. The decrease in PM2.5 is proportional to the reduction in precursor emissions such as NOX, VOCS, sulfur diowhile the long-term scenario is enhanced version of O3 decrease plus high emission reductions for all precursors.Influences of multiple environmental factors on water quality patterns is less studied in large rivers. Landscape analysis, multiple statistical methods, and the water quality index (WQI) were used to detect water quality patterns and influencing factors in China's largest river, the Yangtze River. Compared with the dry season, the wet season had significantly higher total phosphorus (TP), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), and turbidity (TUR). The WQI indicated "Moderate" and "Good" water quality in the wet and dry seasons, respectively. Compared with other sites, the upper reach sites that immediately downstream of the Three Gorges Dam had lower TP, TN, TSS and TUR in both seasons, and had lower and higher water temperature in the wet and dry seasons, respectively. Water quality patterns were mainly driven by heterogeneity in land use (i.e., wetland, cropland, and urban land), hydrology (i.e., water flow, water level), and climate (i.e., rainfall, air temperature). Water quality in the wet season was primarily driven by land use while the joint effect of land use and hydrology primarily drove in the dry season. Decision-makers and regulators of large river basin management may need to develop programs that consider influences from both human and natural drivers for water quality conservation.The Eurasian beaver is currently found in at least 32 European countries, with many of these populations being established in the 1960s. In most European countries, the beaver is under protection, however, when the population is strong, the beaver becomes a game species. In Poland, the beaver is partially protected despite the species having a strong population. In this study we aimed to compare the development trends of Eurasian beaver populations in two management regimes, in Poland (protected) and Belarus (hunted), between 2004 and 2019. We compared beaver population trends in both countries, and analyzed the factors that could impact population growth. In Poland, during this period the population increased 3.5 times, while in Belarus it was only 20%. Distinct differences in the rate of population numbers increase were also observed between regions in Poland, but a stable, slight increase similar in all regions in Belarus. Our study did not show that precipitation or the density of this species influenced the rate of population development in Poland. During this period, hunting and wolf density significantly and negatively impacted beaver population growth in Belarus, but in the long-term analysis, hunting had a lower impact on beaver population growth. We concluded that we can expect a further increase in this population in Poland. Long-term hunting at a level of 13,7% (based on the analysis of population dynamics and hunting bags for Belarus) of the annual population seems to be a safe value for the beaver population. Nevertheless more detailed analysis should be carried out in the face of the large differences between regions.Pancreatic duct adenocarcinoma, commonly known as pancreatic cancer (PC), is a cancer-related cause of death due to delayed diagnosis, metastasis, and drug resistance. Patients with PC suffer from incorrect responses to chemotherapy due to inherent and acquired chemical resistance. Numerous studies have shown the mechanism of the effect of chemoresistance on PC, such as genetic and epigenetic changes or the elucidation of signaling pathways. In this regard, microRNAs (miRNAs) have been identified as essential modulators of gene expression in various cellular functions, including chemoresistance. Thus, identifying the underlying link between microRNAs and PC chemoresistance helps determine the exact pathogenesis of PC. This study aims to classify miRNAs and signaling pathways related to PC chemoresistance, suggesting new therapeutic approaches to overcome PC chemoresistance.
As a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, many treatment courts shifted to offering teleservices. We sought to examine the barriers that clients faced when transitioning to virtual court and treatment, and how this transition impacted their perceptions of the treatment court experience.
The National Center for State Courts administered an online survey between January 1, 2021, and July 31, 2021, deployed to state and local court administrators, which resulted in 1356 unique client responses from 121 courts. The survey measured attitudes about the treatment court process, including interactions with the judge, the behavioral health treatment staff, and treatment groups, as well as barriers to virtual and in-person court. We hypothesized that clients with fewer technological barriers to virtual service, who shifted to virtual court or treatment, would report more positive attitudes to this service delivery.
Clients felt more comfortable participating in virtual court sessions than in-person sessions but weruture research should examine how to improve client connections with staff/group members during virtual court or treatment sessions, particularly as courts and treatment providers are likely to continue some services virtually into the future.
