Objectives While existing work points to the ways parenting behaviors and specific value socialization approaches influence children's internalization of moral values (Baumrind, Child Development 43, 261-267, 1972; Hoffman, Empathy and moral development Implications for caring and justice, 2001; Grusec & Davidov, Child Development, 81, 687-709, 2010), little work has considered the experiences of African American and lower-income families. The current study capitalized on the availability of 53 video-recorded mother-preadolescent conversations about their disagreements from the Early Head Start Research and Evaluation Project (Vogel et al., Early head start children in grade 5 Long-term follow-up of the early head start research and evaluation study sample. Methods Using inductive analysis, we assessed mothers' affective tone, communication styles, and message content during the discussion of problems involving honesty and lying. Results Mothers tended to display warm yet firm affect, incorporate both autonomy-supportive and dominant-directive communication styles, assert that lying is never acceptable, and explain why lying is problematic. Conclusions Mothers' affect, communication styles, and message content reflected a no-nonsense approach to transmitting values about honesty to their children. To our knowledge, the current study is the first qualitative observational investigation of low-income African American mothers' conversations regarding honesty with their children. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved).The process by which multiple items within an object grouping are rapidly summarized along a given visual dimension into a single mean value (i.e., perceptual averaging) has increasingly been shown to interact dynamically with visual working memory (VWM). Commonly, this interaction is studied with respect to the influence of perceptual averaging over VWM, but it is also the case that VWM can support perceptual averaging. Here, we argue that, in the presence of memory-matching elements, VWM exerts an obligatory influence over perceptual averaging even when it is detrimental to do so. Over four experiments, we tested our hypothesis by having individuals perform a mean orientation estimation task while concurrently maintaining a colored object in VWM. We anticipated that mean orientation reports would be attracted to the local mean of memory-matching items if such items are prioritized in perceptual average judgments. This was indeed the case as we observed a persistent bias in mean orientation judgments toward the subset mean of items matching the VWM item color, despite color being entirely irrelevant to the mean orientation task. Our results thus highlight a goal-invariant influence of VWM over perceptual averaging, which we attribute to amplification through memory-driven selection. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved).To date, there remains no consensus about the best evidence-based method for integrating multiple informant data in the diagnosis of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Several approaches exist, including the psychometrically sound approach of averaging scores, as well as the use of "OR" and "AND" algorithms, which are still commonly used in research. The current study tested these major integration methods in their concurrent and longitudinal prediction of clinician-rated impairment, teacher-rated academic, and parent- and self-rated social skill ratings in children overrecruited for ADHD across a 6-year span from childhood to adolescence. Pitavastatin concentration The sample included a total of 800 children, 480 with ADHD, ages 6 to 13, who completed a "gold standard" assessment of ADHD and associated impairment. Overall, the "OR," "AND," and average integration approaches showed significantly high interrelations with one another (r range from .78 to .96) and were all significantly and strongly related to impairment measures concurrently and longitudinally. Multivariate regressions demonstrated that the average integration approach concurrently and longitudinally out predicted the other two approaches. Results demonstrated that the average approach slightly outperformed the other two in its prediction of concurrent and longitudinal clinician-rated impairment, teacher-rated academic skills, and parent- and self-rated child social skills across childhood and adolescence. This reaction utilizes DABSO, a safe and easy-to-handle alternative to SO2 gas. To this day, however, a quantitative microscopic description of the mechanism, thermodynamics, and kinetics of the multistep Strecker reaction is still lacking. In the present work we tackle this study by adopting a state-of-the-art ab initio computational approach, combining an efficient scheme of exploration of the relevant chemical networks with a rigorous determination of the underlying free energy and transition states. We determine the step-by-step chemical pathway from "Strecker precursors" to glycine in solution and calculate the corresponding full free energy landscape. Our results agree well with the scarce available experimental data and complete them, thus providing the first end-to-end study of this complex reaction, a crucial bottleneck for the emergence of life.ABO blood antigens on the human red blood cell membrane as well as different cells in various human tissues have been thoroughly studied. Anti-A and -B antibodies of IgM are present in serum/plasma, but blood group-specific glyco-antigens have not been extensively described. In this study, we performed comprehensive and quantitative serum glycomic analyses of various glycoconjugates and free oligosaccharides in all blood groups. Our comprehensive glycomic approach revealed that blood group-specific antigens in serum/plasma are predominantly present on glycosphingolipids on lipoproteins rather than glycoproteins. Expression of the ABO antigens on glycosphingolipids depends not only on blood type but also on secretor status. Blood group-specific glycans in serum/plasma were classified as type I, whereas those on RBCs had different structures including hexose and hexosamine residues. Analysis of free oligosaccharides revealed that low-molecular-weight blood group-specific glycans, commonly containing lacto-N-difucotetraose, were expressed in serum/plasma according to blood group. Furthermore, comprehensive glycomic analysis in human cerebrospinal fluid showed that many kinds of free oligosaccharides were highly expressed, and low-molecular-weight blood group-specific glycans, which existed in plasma from the same individuals, were present. Our findings provide the first evidence for low-molecular-weight blood group-specific glycans in both serum/plasma and cerebrospinal fluid.α-Synuclein (αS) is a presynaptic protein that binds to cell membranes and is linked to Parkinson's disease (PD). Binding of αS to membranes is a likely first step in the molecular pathophysiology of PD. The αS molecule can adopt multiple conformations, being largely disordered in water, adopting a β-sheet conformation when present in amyloid fibrils, and forming a dynamic multiplicity of α-helical conformations when bound to lipid bilayers and related membrane-mimetic surfaces. Multiscale molecular dynamics simulations in conjunction with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and cross-linking mass spectrometry (XLMS) measurements are used to explore the interactions of αS with an anionic lipid bilayer. The simulations and NMR measurements together reveal a break in the helical structure of the central non-amyloid-β component (NAC) region of αS in the vicinity of residues 65-70, which may facilitate subsequent oligomer formation. Coarse-grained simulations of αS starting from the structure of αS when bound to a detergent micelle reveal the overall pattern of protein contacts to anionic lipid bilayers, while subsequent all-atom simulations provide details of conformational changes upon membrane binding. In particular, simulations and NMR data for liposome-bound αS indicate incipient β-strand formation in the NAC region, which is supported by intramolecular contacts seen via XLMS and simulations. Markov state models based on the all-atom simulations suggest a mechanism of conformational change of membrane-bound αS via a dynamic helix break in the region of residue 65 in the NAC region. link3 The emergent dynamic model of membrane-interacting αS advances our understanding of the mechanism of PD, potentially aiding the design of novel therapeutic approaches.
