The devices have great potential for future temperature-independent electronic applications.Heterocumulenes SeCNR (R = C6H4OMe-2, C6H4Me-2) undergo facile cycloaddition to [(H-dpp-bian)Na(Et2O)2] (1) (H-dpp-bian = N-protonated 1,2-bis[(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imino]acenaphthene) resulting in cycloadducts [(H-dpp-bian)Na(SeCNR)(DME)] (2, 3), which are the first cycloadducts derived from a sodium metallacycle reported so far. A comparative reaction of [(dpp-bian)Mg(THF)3] (10) with SeCNR gives magnesium cycloadducts [(dpp-bian)Mg(SeCNR)(Solv)2] (11, 12), which undergo fast decomposition at room temperature. New compounds are characterized by NMR, EPR, and IR spectroscopy, and elemental and X-ray diffraction analysis. Their electronic structures and reaction pathways were probed using DFT calculations. The influence on the growth of cobalt (Co)-based nanostructures of a surface carbide (Ni2C) layer formed at the Ni(100) surface is revealed via complementary scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements and first-principles calculations. On clean Ni(100) below 200 °C in the sub-monolayer regime, Co forms randomly distributed two-dimensional (2D) islands, while on Ni2C it grows in the direction perpendicular to the surface as well, thus forming two-atomic-layers high islands. We present a simple yet powerful model that explains the different Co growth modes for the two surfaces. A jagged step decoration, not visible on stepped Ni(100), is present on Ni2C. This contrasting behavior on Ni2C is explained by the sharp differences in the mobility of Co atoms for the two cases. By increasing the temperature, Co dissolution is activated with almost no remaining Co at 250 °C on Ni(100) and Co islands still visible on the Ni2C surface up to 300 °C. The higher thermal stability of Co above the Ni2C surface is rationalized by ab initio calculations, which also suggest the existence of a vacancy-assisted mechanism for Co dissolution in Ni(100). The methodology presented in this paper, combining systematically STM measurements with first-principles calculations and computational modelling, opens the way to controlled engineering of bimetallic surfaces with tailored properties. To combine both electride and alkalide characteristics in one molecular switch, it is shown herein that the phenalenyl radical and the M3 ring (M3-PHY, M = Li, Na, and K) stacked with parallel and vertical geometries are good candidates. The former geometry is the superalkali electride e-⋯M3+-PHY while the latter geometry is the superalkalide Mδ--M2(1-δ)+-PHY-. The superalkalide Mδ--M2(1-δ)+-PHY- may isomerize to the superalkali electride e-⋯M3+-PHY (M = Li, Na, and K) using suitable long-wavelength irradiation, while the latter may isomerize to the former with suitable short-wavelength irradiation. Also, applying suitable oriented external electric fields can drive the superalkalide Mδ-M2(1-δ)+-PHY- to change into the superalkali electride e-⋯M3+-PHY (M = Li, Na, and K). The differences in the static and dynamic first hyperpolarizability (β0) values between them were also studied.Searching and developing earth-abundant electrocatalysts with predominant activity and favorable stability are significant to resolve increasing environmental pollution and serious energy crisis. In this paper, Mo-based nanowire arrays (NWAs) were synthesized on carbon fiber paper (CFP), and then Ru-MoP NWAs/CFP was successfully assembled through impregnation of Ru and phosphorization. The as-obtained Ru-MoP NWAs/CFP exhibited excellent performance over a broad pH range. As a result, overpotentials of 39.0, 49.9, and 67.1 mV were required to reach the current density of 10 mA cm-2 in 0.5 M H2SO4, 1 M KOH, and 1 M PBS, respectively. The outstanding performance of Ru-MoP NWAs/CFP is mainly related to the introduction of Ru and P atoms, which may enhance the conductivity of the catalyst and develop additional HER active sites. Our work may afford a novel designing approach to develop high performance HER electrocatalysts.Support vector machine (SVM) is a popular classification method for the analysis of a wide range of data including big biomedical data. Many SVM methods with feature selection have been developed under the frequentist regularization or Bayesian shrinkage frameworks. On the other hand, the value of incorporating a priori known biological knowledge, such as those from functional genomics and functional proteomics, into statistical analysis of -omic data has been recognized in recent years. Such biological information is often represented by graphs. We propose a novel method that assigns Laplace priors to the regression coefficients and incorporates the underlying graph information via a hyper-prior for the shrinkage parameters in the Laplace priors. This enables smoothing of shrinkage parameters for connected variables in the graph and conditional independence between shrinkage parameters for disconnected variables. Extensive simulations demonstrate that our proposed methods achieve the best performance compared to the other existing SVM methods in terms of prediction accuracy. The proposed method are also illustrated in analysis of genomic data from cancer studies, demonstrating its advantage in generating biologically meaningful results and identifying potentially important features.Touch point distribution models are important tools for designing touchscreen interfaces. In this paper, we investigate how the finger movement direction affects the touch point distribution, and how to account for it in modeling. We propose the Rotational Dual Gaussian model, a refinement and generalization of the Dual Gaussian model, to account for the finger movement direction in predicting touch point distribution. In this model, the major axis of the prediction ellipse of the touch point distribution is along the finger movement direction, and the minor axis is perpendicular to the finger movement direction. We also propose using projected target width and height, in lieu of nominal target width and height to model touch point distribution. Evaluation on three empirical datasets shows that the new model reflects the observation that the touch point distribution is elongated along the finger movement direction, and outperforms the original Dual Gaussian Model in all prediction tests. Compared with the original Dual Gaussian model, the Rotational Dual Gaussian model reduces the RMSE of touch error rate prediction from 8.49% to 4.95%, and more accurately predicts the touch point distribution in target acquisition. Using the Rotational Dual Gaussian model can also improve the soft keyboard decoding accuracy on smartwatches. There has been much research exploring the use of fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-sensorized needles in the prostate biopsy procedure, but all FBG needles used in the research need to be calibrated, which is time consuming and prone to human errors. In this work, a semi-automatic robotic system was developed to perform FBG needle calibration. Compared to manual calibration results, the robotic system is able to calibrate FBG needles with the similar level of accuracy as achieved by an experienced manual operator, thus reducing the time cost during the needle calibration process.Audio descriptions (ADs) can increase access to videos for blind people. Researchers have explored different mechanisms for generating ADs, with some of the most recent studies involving paid novices; to improve the quality of their ADs, novices receive feedback from reviewers. However, reviewer feedback is not instantaneous. To explore the potential for real-time feedback through automation, in this paper, we analyze 1, 120 comments that 40 sighted novices received from a sighted or a blind reviewer. We find that feedback patterns tend to fall under four themes (i) Quality; commenting on different AD quality variables, (ii) Speech Act; the utterance or speech action that the reviewers used, (iii) Required Action; the recommended action that the authors should do to improve the AD, and (iv) Guidance; the additional help that the reviewers gave to help the authors. We discuss which of these patterns could be automated within the review process as design implications for future AD collaborative authoring systems. The spatial behavior of passersby can be critical to blind individuals to initiate interactions, preserve personal space, or practice social distancing during a pandemic. Among other use cases, wearable cameras employing computer vision can be used to extract proxemic signals of others and thus increase access to the spatial behavior of passersby for blind people. Analyzing data collected in a study with blind (N=10) and sighted (N=40) participants, we explore (i) visual information on approaching passersby captured by a head-worn camera; (ii) pedestrian detection algorithms for extracting proxemic signals such as passerby presence, relative position, distance, and head pose; and (iii) opportunities and limitations of using wearable cameras for helping blind people access proxemics related to nearby people. selleck inhibitor Our observations and findings provide insights into dyadic behaviors for assistive pedestrian detection and lead to implications for the design of future head-worn cameras and interactions. The majority of online video contents remain inaccessible to people with visual impairments due to the lack of audio descriptions to depict the video scenes. Content creators have traditionally relied on professionals to author audio descriptions, but their service is costly and not readily-available. We investigate the feasibility of creating more cost-effective audio descriptions that are also of high quality by involving novices. Specifically, we designed, developed, and evaluated ViScene, a web-based collaborative audio description authoring tool that enables a sighted novice author and a reviewer either sighted or blind to interact and contribute to scene descriptions (SDs)-text that can be transformed into audio through text-to-speech. Through a mixed-design study with N = 60 participants, we assessed the quality of SDs created by sighted novices with feedback from both sighted and blind reviewers. Our results showed that with ViScene novices could produce content that is Descriptive, Objective, Referable, and Clear at a cost of i.e., US$2.81pvm to US$5.48pvm, which is 54% to 96% lower than the professional service. However, the descriptions lacked in other quality dimensions (e.g., learning, a measure of how well an SD conveys the video's intended message). While professional audio describers remain the gold standard, for content creators who cannot afford it, ViScene offers a cost-effective alternative, ultimately leading to a more accessible medium.Datasets sourced from people with disabilities and older adults play an important role in innovation, benchmarking, and mitigating bias for both assistive and inclusive AI-infused applications. However, they are scarce. We conduct a systematic review of 137 accessibility datasets manually located across different disciplines over the last 35 years. Our analysis highlights how researchers navigate tensions between benefits and risks in data collection and sharing. We uncover patterns in data collection purpose, terminology, sample size, data types, and data sharing practices across communities of focus. We conclude by critically reflecting on challenges and opportunities related to locating and sharing accessibility datasets calling for technical, legal, and institutional privacy frameworks that are more attuned to concerns from these communities.
