Past research suggests that brief exposures to greenspace can enhance outcomes related to facets of trait emotional intelligence. The current study employed a retrospective life course analysis to examine whether residential greenness and other aspects of the residential environment predict trait emotional intelligence in early adulthood. Childhood exposure for 297 college students was based on up to three home addresses from birth to age 18, weighted by residency duration. Greenspace was calculated with normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) values in 500 m and 1000 m buffers. Partially supporting our predictions, we found emotional intelligence in young adults growing up in lower-income areas was positively associated with cumulative neighborhood greenness around childhood homes. The opposite pattern was found for those who grew up in higher-income areas, with greater greenness500-m being associated with lower emotional intelligence scores. These are the first reported findings involving physical/natural environmental correlates of emotional intelligence and among the first to suggest an equigenic effect of greenspace on socio-emotional outcomes whereby exposure might help overturn inequalities rather than merely reduce them. If a causal link exists between nature exposure and emotional intelligence, then neighborhood greening might help children who begin life at a societal disadvantage through enhancing their ability to understand, use, and manage emotions.
Swelling after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is often profound and persistent, increasing risks of DVT, infection, and wound dehiscence, and impairing rehabilitation. We investigated the feasibility and initial efficacy of a multimodal swelling control intervention (MSI), comprised of an inelastic adjustable compression garment (CG), manual lymph drainage (MLD) massage, and home exercise program (HEP) after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) compared to a control group.

Sixteen individuals (mean age 64.7±7.1y) performed MSI for three weeks after TKA, through day 21 (D21). Outcome measures included patient satisfaction, safety, patient adherence, and swelling measured by Single Frequency Bioimpedance Assessment (SF-BIA). All outcomes were measured preoperatively and at postoperative D4, D7, D14, D21 and, three weeks after discontinuing MSI, on D42. Efficacy of MSI was calculated with Hedge's g effect size estimates using the SF-BIA ratios for MSI versus CONTROL (N=56; mean age 64.3±9.3y) at key post operative time points.

Patient satisfaction was 93% with no adverse events. Adherence to CG, MLD, and HEP were 85%, 99%, and 97% respectively. Peak swelling reduction with MSI was at D21 (Hedges' g=1.60 at D21 (95% CI 0.99, 2.21)). Minimal change in swelling was observed three weeks after cessation of MSI on D42.

The self-administered MSI program is feasible and demonstrated strong initial efficacy to control swelling after TKA. Minimal rebound swelling was observed once MSI was withdrawn at D21. Future studies should examine the efficacy of inelastic adjustable compression in a randomized controlled trial.

Currently, shimming precedes most acquisition procedures in the laboratory, and this mostly semi-automatic procedure often needs to be repeated, which can be cumbersome and time-consuming. The paper investigates the feasibility of completely automating and accelerating the shimming procedure by applying deep learning (DL). We show that DL can relate measured spectral shape to shim current specifications and thus rapidly predict three shim currents simultaneously, given only four input spectra. Due to the lack of accessible data for developing shimming algorithms, we also introduce a database that served as our DL training set, and allows inference of changes to 1H NMR signals depending on shim offsets. In situ experiments of deep regression with ensembles demonstrate a high success rate in spectral quality improvement for random shim distortions over different neural architectures and chemical substances. This paper presents a proof-of-concept that machine learning can simplify and accelerate the shimming problem, either as a stand-alone method, or in combination with traditional shimming methods. Currently, three imaging approaches have been demonstrated to be useful for hyperpolarized 129Xe MR in lungs Fast Gradient Recalled Echo (FGRE), Radial Projection Reconstruction (PR), and spiral/cones. Typically, non-Cartesian acquisitions such as PR and spiral/cones require specific data post-processing, such as interpolating, regridding, and density-weighting procedures for image reconstruction, which often leads to smoothing effects and resolution degradation. On the other hand, Cartesian methods such as FGRE are not short-echo time (TE) methods; they suffer from imaging gradient-induced diffusion-weighting of the k-space center, and employ a significant number of radio-frequency (RF) pulses. Due to the non-renewable magnetization of the hyperpolarized media, the use of a large number 129Xe images were acquired from a custom hollow acrylic phantom (0.04L) and two normal rats (129Xe only), utilizing both single-breath and multiple-breath schemes. For the 129Xe phantom images, the apparent diffusion coefficient, T1, and T2* relaxation maps were acquired and generated. Blurring due to the T2* decay and B0 field variation were simulated to estimate dependence of the image resolution on the duration of the data acquisition windows (i.e. sector length), and temperature-induced resonance frequency shift from the low field magnet hardware.

Healthy human teeth were obtained and divided into young (age ≤ 25, n=12) and old (age ≥ 60, n=12) groups. Odontoblasts were counted with standard hematoxylin and eosin staining. Odontoblast apoptosis within dentinal tubules was determined by cleaved caspase-3 immunostaining. Teeth in each group were evaluated by dynamic nanoindentation and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS).

The number of odontoblasts decreased significantly with age. The most prominent change occurred in the apical third of roots. Odontoblastic apoptosis was visualized within dentinal tubules. The apoptosis staining fraction was significantly higher in the outer and inner dentin of old teeth when compared with young teeth (p<0.05). this website EDS showed increased calcium content in peritubular dentin but a decrease in the intertubular dentin with increasing age. Invasive fungal rhinosinusitis (IFRS) is a potentially fatal disease that affects the severely immunocompromised and requires aggressive treatment. The objective of this study is to better describe predictors of biopsy positivity in patients at high risk of IFRS at a pediatric hospital.

This was a single-center case-control study of 36 patients (37 total biopsies)≤21 years old with one of five high-risk oncologic/hematologic diagnoses who underwent operative endoscopy for clinical suspicion for IFRS. IFRS positivity was defined histologically. Collected information included patient demographics, primary diagnosis, oncologic relapses, time from diagnosis to biopsy, clinical characteristics, and endoscopic findings. These data were used to create a simple predictive scoring system.

We analysed 28,400 hours of video data (thermal network cameras at 14 road sections in south-west Germany) with 2,841 animal-vehicle encounters (1,960 roe deer, Capreolus capreolus, 696 red fox, Vulpes vulpes and 185 wild boar, Sus scrofa) and classified animal behaviour before and during contact with a vehicle. We fitted two sets of models to the data. In the first step, we modelled the intensity of the behavioural reaction exhibited by the animals as a function of behavioural and environmental predictors using ordinal Bayesian mixed-effect regression models. In a second step, we modelled the probability of a positive vs. a negative behavioural response in terms of WVC risk using binomial mixed-effect regression models.
