Statistical investigation regarding grasshopper escapement.
A short-rod-shaped, non-spore-forming endophytic actinobacterium, was isolated from a surface-sterilized leaf of Acrostichum aureum in Fangchenggang, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China, designated strain CBS4Y-1T and examined by a polyphasic approach to determine its taxonomic position. This actinobacterium was Gram-staining-positive and aerobic. Substrate mycelia and aerial mycelia were not observed, and no diffusible pigments were observed on the media tested. Strain CBS4Y-1T grew optimally with 0-1.0% (w/v) NaCl at 30 °C, pH 7.0-8.0. Comparative analysis of 16S rRNA genes showed that strain CBS4Y-1T shared the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with Nocardioides marinus CL-DD14T (96.7%) and Nocardioides terrae BX5-10T (96.7%). Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequence and phylogenomic analysis based on core proteomes alignment revealed that strain CBS4Y-1T belonged to the genus Nocardioides and formed a distinct cluster within the genus Nocardioides. The DNA G + C content of strain CBS4Y-1T was 71.1 mol%. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained LL-diaminopimelic acid and MK-8(H4) was the predominant menaquinone. Phosphatidylglycerol (PG), diphosphatidylglycerol (DPG), phosphatidylinositol (PI) were detected in the polar lipid extracts. The major fatty acids were iso-C160, C181ω9c and iso-C170. On the basis of phylogenetic analysis, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, strain CBS4Y-1T represents a novel species of the genus Nocardioides, for which the name Nocardioides acrostichi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CBS4Y-1T (= KCTC 49238T = CGMCC 4.7548T).Seven new Entomocorticium species (Peniophoraceae) are described based on morphology and phylogenetic analyses. Along with the type species (E. dendroctoni), Entomocorticium comprises eight species of nutritional symbionts of pine bark beetles in North America. Entomocorticium cobbii is the mycangial associate of the southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis, and E. parmeteri is the mycangial associate of the western pine beetle, D. brevicomis. Entomocorticium whitneyi, E. portiae, E. kirisitsii, E. oberwinkleri and the previously described E. dendroctoni have been isolated from galleries of D. ponderosae and D. jeffreyi in western North America. Entomocorticium sullivanii forms an ambrosia-like layer of basidia and basidiospores in the pupal chambers of Ips avulsus in the southeastern USA. Entomocorticium is phylogenetically placed within Peniophora, a corticioid genus of wood decay fungi with wind-dispersed basidiospores. At least four species of Entomocorticium produce basidiospores on basidia with reduced sterigmata that apparently do not forcibly discharge basidiospores. Another basidiomycete, Gloeocystidium ipidophilum, was described from Ips typographus galleries in Europe, but it is phylogenetically and taxonomically placed in another genus of wood decay fungi as Cylindrobasidium ipidophilum (Physalacriaceae). The free-living wood-decay fungus Phlebiopsis gigantea (Phanerochaetaceae) has been occasionally associated with bark beetles but is unrelated to C. ipidophilum or Entomocorticium.
To construct a new embryonic quality scoring system to compare groups of embryos at different developmental stages.

Based on a hypothesis that the implantation potential of any embryo in an ovum pickup (OPU) cycle remains the same at any stage of development, be it day 2, 3, or 5, a new embryo quality scoring (EQS) system was designed. It was based on the analysis of the clinical results of 1610 single embryo transfers. We validated this scoring system in the comparison of embryonic quality between groups by evaluating the mean scores calculated at day 2, day 3, and day 5 for 957 embryos (150 cycles) from 3 different groups. We then compared EQSs of patients with pregnancy favorable factors (group A) such as young age and high AMH levels, with the patients with contra features (group B).

We confirmed that each mean EQS assessed at different stages of embryonic development within the same group was similar. The mean EQSs on day 3 and day 5 in group A were significantly higher than the mean EQSs on days 2, 3, and 5 in group B.

The novel EQS system proposed by us enables embryonic quality comparison between groups of embryos at different developmental stages.

This scoping review explores how undergraduate health professions' students learn to engage with uncertainty related to their academic practice. To our knowledge, this is the first scoping review which examines teaching and learning related to uncertainty across multiple health professions. The scoping review is underpinned by the five-stage framework of (Arksey and O'Malley in Scoping studies Towards a methodological framework International Journal of Social Research Methodology 8(1) 19-32, 2005). We searched MEDLINE, Embase, PsychINFO, ISI Web of Science, and CINAHL and hand-searched selected health professions' education journals. The search strategy yielded a total of 5,017 articles, of which 97 were included in the final review. Four major themes were identified "Learners' interactions with uncertainty"; "Factors that influence learner experiences"; "Educational outcomes"; and, "Teaching and learning approaches". Our findings highlight that uncertainty is a ubiquitous concern in health professions' education, with students experiencing different forms of uncertainty at many stages of their training. These experiences are influenced by both individual and system-related factors. Formal teaching strategies that directly support learning around uncertainty were infrequent, and included arts-based teaching, and clinical case presentations. Students also met with uncertainty indirectly through problem-based learning, clinical teaching, humanities teaching, simulation, team-based learning, small group learning, tactical games, online discussion of anatomy topics, and virtual patients. Reflection and reflective practice are also mentioned as strategies within the literature.Visual diagnosis of radiographs, histology and electrocardiograms lends itself to deliberate practice, facilitated by large online banks of cases. Which cases to supply to which learners in which order is still to be worked out, with there being considerable potential for adapting the learning. Advances in statistical modeling, based on an accumulating learning curve, offer methods for more effectively pairing learners with cases of known calibrations. Using demonstration radiograph and electrocardiogram datasets, the advantages of moving from traditional regression to multilevel methods for modeling growth in ability or performance are demonstrated, with a final step of integrating case-level item-response information based on diagnostic grouping. This produces more precise individual-level estimates that can eventually support learner adaptive case selection. The progressive increase in model sophistication is not simply statistical but rather brings the models into alignment with core learning principles including the importance of taking into account individual differences in baseline skill and learning rate as well as the differential interaction with cases of varying diagnosis and difficulty. The developed approach can thus give researchers and educators a better basis on which to anticipate learners' pathways and individually adapt their future learning. In the midst of continuous health professions curriculum reforms, critical questions arise about the extent to which conceptual ideas are actually put into practice. Curricula are often not implemented as intended. An under-explored aspect that might play a role is governance. In light of major curriculum changes, we explored educators' perspectives of the role of governance in the process of translating curriculum goals and concepts into institutionalized curriculum change at micro-level (teacher-student). In three Dutch medical schools, 19 educators with a dual role (teacher and coordinator) were interviewed between March and May 2018, using the rich pictures method. We employed qualitative content analysis with inductive coding. Data collection occurred concurrently with data analysis. Different governance processes were mentioned, each with its own effects on the curriculum and organizational responses. MEK activation In Institute 1, participants described an unclear governance structure, resulting in implementation chaos in which an abstract educational concept could not be fully realized. In Institute 2, participants described a top-down and strict governance structure contributing to relatively successful implementation of the educational concept. However it also led to demotivation of educators, who started rebelling to recover their perceived loss of freedom. In Institute 3, participants described a relatively fragmentized process granting a lot of freedom, which contributed to contentment and motivation but did not fully produce the intended changes. Our paper empirically illustrates the importance of governance in curriculum change. To advance curriculum change processes and improve their desired outcomes it seems important to define and explicate both hard and soft governance processes.Oxidized cholesterols and lipids accumulate in Bruch's membrane in age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It remains unknown what causal relationship exists between these substances and AMD pathophysiology. We addressed the hypothesis that a prevalent form, 7-ketocholesterol (7KC), promotes choroidal endothelial cell (CEC) migration and macular neovascularization in AMD. Compared to control, 7KC injection caused 40% larger lectin-stained lesions, but 70% larger lesions measured by optical coherence tomography one week after laser-injury. At two weeks, 7KC-injected eyes had 86% larger alpha smooth muscle actin (αSMA)-labeled lesions and more collagen-labeling than control. There was no difference in cell death. 7KC-treated RPE/choroids had increased αSMA but decreased VE-cadherin. Compared to control-treated CECs, 7KC unexpectedly reduced endothelial VE-cadherin, CD31 and VEGFR2 and increased αSMA, fibroblast activation protein (FAP) and transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ). Inhibition of TGFβ receptor-mediated signaling by SB431542 abrogated 7KC-induced loss of endothelial and increase in mesenchymal proteins in association with decreased transcription factor, SMAD3. Knockdown of SMAD3 partially inhibited 7KC-mediated loss of endothelial proteins and increase in αSMA and FAP. Compared to control, 7KC-treatment of CECs increased Rac1GTP and migration, and both were inhibited by the Rac1 inhibitor; however, CECs treated with 7KC had reduced tube formation. These findings suggest that 7KC, which increases in AMD and with age, induces mesenchymal transition in CECs making them invasive and migratory, and causing fibrosis in macular neovascularization. Further studies to interfere with this process may reduce fibrosis and improve responsiveness to anti-VEGF treatment in non-responsive macular neovascularization in AMD.
