Prematurity has been linked to reduced lung function up to age 33 years, but its long-term effects on lung function and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are unknown. To address this question, we investigated associations between prematurity, lung function, and COPD in the sixth decade of life using data from the Tasmanian Longitudinal Health Study (TAHS).

Data were analysed from 1445 participants in the TAHS. Lung function was measured at 53 years of age. Gestational ages were very preterm (28 weeks to <32 weeks), moderate preterm (32 weeks to <34 weeks), late preterm (34 weeks to <37 weeks) and term (≥37 weeks). Linear and logistic regression models were fitted to investigate associations of prematurity with lung function measures (FEV
, forced vital capacity [FVC], FEV
/FVC ratio, forced expiratory flow at 25-75% of FVC [FEF
], diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide [DLCO]) and COPD (post-bronchodilator FEV
/FVC less than the lower limit of normal), adjusting for sex, age, heighe preterm birth was not associated with lower FEV
/FVC ratio or COPD.

This is the first study to investigate the effect of prematurity on lung function into middle-age. Data show that very-to-moderate prematurity is associated with obstructive lung function deficits including COPD well into the sixth decade of life and that this effect is compounded by personal smoking.

We investigated the physiological basis of salinity stress tolerance in Oryza species by using six rice genotypes (Oryza sativa L.) and four wild rice species. Three weeks of salinity treatment significantly (P less then 0.05) reduced physiological and growth indices of all cultivated and wild rice lines. However, the impact of salinity-induced growth reduction differed substantially among accessions. Salt tolerant accessions showed better control over gas exchange properties, exhibited higher tissue tolerance, and retained higher potassium ion content despite higher sodium ion accumulation in leaves. Wild rice species showed relatively lower and steadier xylem sap sodium ion content over the period of 3weeks analysed, suggesting better control over ionic sodium xylem loading and its delivery to shoots with efficient vacuolar sodium ion sequestration. Contrary to this, saline sensitive genotypes managed to avoid initial Na+ loading but failed to accomplish this in the long term and showed higher sap sodium ion content. Conclusively, our results suggest that wild rice genotypes have more efficient control over xylem sodium ion loading, rely on tissue tolerance mechanisms and allow for a rapid osmotic adjustment by using sodium ions as cheap osmoticum for osmoregulation.Annexin A2 (ANXA2) is a member of the A subfamily of a multifunctional calcium dependent membrane phospholipid binding protein family. The mRNA expression of ANXA2 is consistent with ovary function and egg laying in chickens. In this study, six nucleotide polymorphisms in the key promoter region of chicken ANXA2 gene (-2861 bp to -1394 bp), i.e., g.-2337 indel (GT), g.-2255 C > T, g. -2248 A > G, g.-2188 A > G, g.-2169 G > A, g.-2160 A > C, were identified. Their distributions in populations of Xinyang Brown, Recessive White Rock, Wenchang and Wenshang Barred chickens were analyzed. In the Recessive White Rock chicken population, CAA, CAG and TGG were three major haplotypes. Association analysis indicated that the individuals with diplotype TGG/TGG laid more eggs at 32 weeks, and the individual with diplotype CAG/TGG laid at the earlier age. Luciferase activity assay showed that mutation from C to T at -2255 increased trascriptional activity of chicken ANXA2, which is consistent with its effect on egg laying traits.Polyphenol oxidase (PPO) enzyme was purified from avocado (Persea americana) by ammonium sulfate precipitation 0-80%, dialysis and affinity chromatography. Characterization studies were performed with catechol (0.10 M, pH 7.2, 37 °C), 4-methyl catechol (0.10 M, pH 6.0, 37 °C), pyrogallol (0.02 M, pH 8.5, 5 °C), chlorogenic acid (0.20 M, pH 6.8, 10 °C) and caffeic acid (0.20 M, pH 8.5, 10 °C), respectively. Vmax and KM values were determined for catechol (15789.96 U*mL-1*min-1, 10 mM), 4-methyl catechol (6768.40 U*mL-1*min-1, 2 mM), pyrogallol (6802.72 U*mL-1*min-1, 4 mM), chlorogenic acid (1377.97 U*mL-1*min-1, 14.29 mM) and caffeic acid (2567.24 U*mL-1*min-1, 5 mM). PPO was purified as 147.73-fold and 154.00-fold by Sepharose 4B-L-Tyrosine-p-aminobenzoic acid and Sepharose-6B-L-Tyrosine-p-aminobenzoic acid, respectively. 4B isolated PPO gave two bands at 35 and 50 kDa in SDS-PAGE while visible and slightly visible bands at 50-70 kDa and 100 kDa in Native-PAGE. 6B isolated PPO gave bands as distinctively at 50 kDa and unclearly at around 35 kDa in SDS-PAGE while visible and slightly visible bands at 50-70 and 100 kDa in Native-PAGE. The synthesis of original 6B-affinity gel and no any study found in literature on affinity purification of avocado PPO show importance of our study.Conventional fermentation processes need to be upgraded to produce a wide array of biomolecules to overcome lower product yield. The cost of production of biomolecules using the fermentation method could be reduced by increasing the product yield by various process enhancement methods. In this study, different innovative process enhancement methods were evaluated to increase the co-production of uricase and alkaline protease at the bioreactor level. Ultrasound-assisted fermentation (UAF), Extractive fermentation (ATPS), and Ultrasound-assisted extractive fermentation (UATPS) are the three innovative methods used for process enhancement. Maximum enzyme production was obtained in a combinatorial approach of ultrasound and extractive fermentation, i.e., ultrasound-assisted extractive fermentation where uricase and protease production enhanced by 2.5 fold and 1.9 fold, respectively, as compared to conventional fermentation. The purpose of this cross-sectional survey was to examine the quality of life and level of burden experienced by mothers of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes (n = 199). Data was collected using a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Zarit Burden Interview Scale (ZBIS), and the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) instruments. A simple descriptive analysis was conducted, and the Pearson's correlation coefficient was utilized to determine the correlation among variables. Most respondents (68.9%) reported moderate to severe burden on the ZBIS. Across age groups, statistically significant, negative correlations were found between burden and physical health (r = -0.371, p  less then  0.001), social relationships (r = -0.389, p  less then  0.001), psychological health (r = -0.445, p  less then  0.001) and environment (r = -0.438, p  less then  0.001). Mothers of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes reported an inverse relationship between burden and quality of life influenced by the occupation of caregiving. Occupational therapy practitioners can address strategies to reduce caregiver burden and improve mothers' quality of life.Fat storage-inducing transmembrane protein 2 (FITM2) plays an important role in regulating lipid storage and could be regarded as a candidate gene for intramuscular fat deposition in pigs. The aim of this study was to clone the coding domain sequence (CDS) of FITM2 gene, to compare the nucleotide acid and deduced amino acid sequences between breeds and species, to analyze the structure and characteristics of protein and to detect the expression profile of gene. The results exhibited that the CDS of FITM2 gene was 789 bp in length. The mutation of nucleotide acids led to the mutation of deduced amino acids between Banna miniature inbred pigs and other two breeds (Yorkshire × Landrace pigs and Duroc × (Landrace × Yorkshire) pigs). It was indicated that high identities of nucleotide acid and deduced amino acid sequences between Banna miniature inbred pigs and other species. The deduced amino acids were composed of loops and alpha helices in the structure. FITM2 protein may be a 30 kDa hydrophobic protein with 26 phosphorylation sites and one potential N-glycosylated site. FITM2 gene was widely expressed in various tissues, and the highest expression level was in adipose tissue.Butyrophilin (BTN1A1) gene is located in the neighborhood of a quantitative trait loci for milk production in bovine autosome 23. We verified the genetic variability of exon-3 in BTN1A1 and its association with milk production traits in Holstein Friesian crossbreds of Kerala. Genomic DNA was isolated and 94 bp fragment enclosing exon-3 was amplified by primers designed using PRIMER 3 based on reference sequence (GenBank NC_037350). Pooled amplicons were sequenced by Sanger's method and a novel single nucleotide polymorphism due to a transversion of guanine to adenine at position 21 of amplicon (G21A) leading to amino acid change arginine to glutamine was detected. The study population was genotyped by high-resolution melt curve analysis and revealed two genotypes with frequencies GG/0.84 and GA/0.14. The allele G was found to be the major one (G/0.93 and A/0.07). Moreover, association analysis of G21A with milk production traits was done using the General linear model-Analysis of Variance considering herd, season, and parity as non-genetic factors and milk production trait as a dependent variable. read more In analysis, animals with GA genotype were found to be having significantly higher (p ≤ 0.01) 305 day milk (GG2720.74 ± 122.92 kg; GA3250.20 ± 183.24 kg), fat (GG106.55 ± 4.32 kg; GA126.30 ± 13.35 kg), and SNF yield (GG 211.52 ± 9.20 kg; GA 246.90 ± 13.70 kg). However, GG (7.80 ± 0.04) genotype has significantly higher (p ≤ 0.05) SNF percent than GA (7.65 ± 0.07). Butyrophilin gene polymorphism G21A can be suggested as a molecular marker for future breeding programmes of cattle.Lateral ankle sprains are a commonly incurred injury in sports. They have a high recurrence rate and can lead to the development of persistent injury associated symptoms. We performed a quantitative synthesis of published case reports documenting the kinematics of acute lateral ankle sprains and episodes of 'giving-way' of the ankle joint to provide a comprehensive description of the mechanisms. A systematic literature search was conducted to screen records within MEDLINE® and EMBASE®. Additional strategies included manual search of specific journals, as well as contacting researchers in relevant communities to retrieve unpublished data. Twenty-four cases were included in the quantitative synthesis, 11 from individual case reports and 13 from four separate case series. Two authors independently reviewed all the articles and extracted ankle joint kinematic data. Excessive ankle inversion was the most pronounced kinematic pattern observed across all included cases, with a mean peak inversion angle of 67.5° (range 2.
