Fifteen women sustained injury during their 2nd trimester, of which 14 delivered normal babies, while six sustained spinal injury during the 3rd trimester. Of these women, five delivered normal babies at term. Outcomes of pregnancy appear significantly affected if a spinal injury occurs during the 1st trimester of pregnancy; however, injuries sustained during the 2nd and 3rd trimesters can have good obstetric outcomes.
A prospective cohort study.

This study aimed to reveal physical functions and comorbidity affecting collapse at ≥4 weeks after hospital admission of patients with osteoporotic vertebral fracture.

Only a few studies have investigated the influence of physical function and activity on collapse in patients with osteoporotic vertebral fractures.

This prospective cohort study analyzed patients with osteoporotic vertebral fractures admitted to the hospital between March 2018 and October 2019. Logistic regression analysis was performed to explore the predictors of vertebral collapse at >4 weeks after admission. Model 1 used basic medical information and physical functions at admission; model 2 used basic medical information and physical function and activity at >4 weeks after admission.

In the model 1 results of logistic regression analysis, cardiovascular disease (odds ratio [OR], 12.27; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.28-117.91) was extracted as a factor affecting vertebral collapse at ≥4 weeks after admission. In the model 2 results of logistic regression analysis, cardiovascular disease (OR, 34.57; 95% CI, 2.53-471.74), movement control during one leg standing at 4 weeks (OR, 7.25; 95% CI, 1.36-38.71), and Pain Catastrophizing Scale score at 4 weeks (OR, 1.11; 95% CI, 1.01-1.21) were extracted as factors affecting vertebral collapse at ≥4 weeks after admission.

Our results indicate that physical functions and comorbidity affect collapse at ≥4 weeks after admission in patients with osteoporotic vertebral fractures.

The number of aging physicians is increasing as the global population ages. With aging, anesthesiologists would be expected to experience changes in their professional position. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the current professional status of Korean anesthesiologists aged over 60 years.

Registered anesthesiologists aged over 60 years in Korea were invited for a survey. The questionnaire addressed 10 subjects with 40 questions that focused on demographics, practical activities, work conditions, difficulties experienced due to physical changes caused by aging, and economic status.

In total, 122 anesthesiologists responded to the survey (response rate 15.7%). Of them, 30.3% were working in honorary and advisory positions at tertiary hospitals, while 19.7% were working as pain physicians. Majority of the respondents were working for 5 days a week (41.8%) and 6-8 hours/day (48.4%). Majority of them (79.5%) were generally satisfied with their present life.

Majority of the senior anesthesiologists were working at general hospitals and they reported being "satisfied" with the current status of their life. However, the clinical practice and retirement strategies of senior anesthesiologists need to be evaluated systematically to prepare for the continuing gradual increase in the number of senior anesthesiologists.

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) can be successfully performed using highly developed implantation techniques. However, anatomical barriers, such as epidural adhesion, may impede placing the electrode for SCS in an adequate position.

A 60-year-old female who had SCS with an electrode at the T9-10 level removed because she had a wound infection at the back incision site. After the wound infection was completely resolved, we tried to re-insert the SCS electrode. However, it was difficult to advance it up to the T11 level due to epidural adhesion. We performed a combined epidural adhesiolysis using balloon decompression with an inflatable balloon catheter. After that, the SCS lead was successfully placed up to the T11 level, and implantation of SCS was performed.

When a patient has epidural adhesion, an epidural adhesiolysis with an inflatable balloon catheter may help the insertion of the SCS electrode in the epidural space.

However, they still have the risk of spurious results because they include too few studies and participants. The use of trial sequential analysis (TSA) has increased recently, providing more information on the precision and uncertainty of meta-analysis results. This makes it a powerful tool for clinicians to assess the conclusiveness of meta-analysis. TSA provides monitoring boundaries or futility boundaries, helping clinicians prevent unnecessary trials. The use and interpretation of TSA should be based on an understanding of the principles and assumptions behind TSA, which may provide more accurate, precise, and unbiased information to clinicians, patients, and policymakers. In this article, the history, background, principles, and assumptions behind TSA are described, which would lead to its better understanding, implementation, and interpretation.
Heightening oxidative stress and inflammation is an important pathophysiological mechanism underlying air pollution health effects in people with asthma. Melatonin can suppress oxidative stress and inflammation in pulmonary and circulatory systems. However, the role of melatonin in the oxidative stress and physiological responses to air pollution exposure has not been examined in children with asthma.

In this panel study of 43 asthmatic children (5-13years old), each child had 4 clinic visits with a 2-week interval between two consecutive visits. At each visit, urine samples were collected and subsequently analyzed for 6-sulfatoxymelatonin (aMT6s) as a surrogate of circulating melatonin and for malondialdehyde (MDA) and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) as two biomarkers of systemic oxidative stress. At each clinic visit, children were measured for pulmonary function and fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO, a marker of pulmonary inflammation). None of the children reported to have taking melatonin suism to alleviate the adverse effects. The hydrophilic biomaterial was constructed based on the soluble extracellular polysaccharides (s-EPS) secreted by Bacillus megaterium and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), namely ZIF-8@s-EPS, wrapped in s-EPS shell with ZIF-8 as the core. ZIF-8@s-EPS was used as a novel multifunctional biomaterial in water treatment for the first time. Unexpectedly, results showed ZIF-8@s-EPS with strong synergistic effect presented multifunctional performances including descaling, antifouling and antibacterial. Scale inhibition efficiency reached 98.63% for CaCO3 and as high as 99.40% for CaSO4 at concentration 20.00 mg/L. The synergy of s-EPS and ZIF-8 demonstrated effective antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and inhibitory effect on biofilms, and result presented that ZIF-8@s-EPS could inhibit the growth of nearly 89.4% P. aeruginosa. Therefore, the obtained insights will shed light on the development of s-EPS modified biomaterials in water treatment.Microplastic (MP) pollution has attracted global attention due to the extensive use of plastic products. The hydrophobic MP surface provides a habitat for multiple microorganisms. Although there have been several studies on the impact of plastic particles on microbial communities, there are few reviews that have systematically summarized the interaction between MPs and microbes and their effects on human health and biochemical circulation. The discussions in this review will take place under the following topics (1) MPs prompt colonization, biofilm generation, and transfer of environmental microbes; (2) the microbial communities can cause the morphological alterations and biodegradation of MPs; (3) MP-microbe combinations can induce the alteration of intestinal flora and hazard animal health; (4) the biogeochemical cycles affected by MP-microbe interactions. This review will highlight the close interactions between MPs and microorganisms, and provide suggestions for future studies. The effect of sludge retention time (SRT) on the production of organic nitrogen (ON) fractions (particulate, colloidal and soluble) and the biodegradability of produced soluble ON in an activated sludge process was investigated. Synthetic wastewater with no ON was fed to the four laboratory-scale reactors operated at SRTs of 2, 5, 10 and 20 d, respectively. Effluent ON from each reactor was fractionated into particulate, colloidal, and soluble ON (pON, cON, and sON). see more The effluent total ON contained 5.7 to 11.9 mg/L pON, 3.6 to 3.8 mg/L cON, and 2.3 to 4.6 mg/L sON. cON fraction can be larger than sON fraction in the secondary effluent. Therefore, besides focusing on sON, water resource recovery facilities aiming to meet stricter effluent TN limits should also identify appropriate technologies to target cON. More than 50% of effluent sON was biodegradable under SRTs of 2, 5, and 10 d but the biodegradability decreased to 31% at 20-d SRT. Large fractions of non-biodegradable sON (69%) at SRT of 20-d could be contributed by extracellular polymeric substances and soluble microbial products, specifically biomass associated products due to endogenous respiration. Thus, sON generated at long SRTs may take longer to decompose in receiving waters. Some trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) can be considered as ubiquitous contaminants since the 1950s, and the study of their historical distribution within river sediments allows us to better understand the temporal variation of the chemical quality of sediments, and make assumptions about the most insightful forcings impacting these distributions. In this study, the occurrence of 41 TrOCs of various classes (i.e. pharmaceutical products and pesticides) was studied in a sedimentary core sampled in a disused dock along the Seine River, France. This core covers a 60 year-long period between 1944 and 2003, and 23 TrOCs were detected at least once. Their concentrations mainly ranged between 1 and 10 ng g-1 within the core, except for tetracycline that exhibited higher concentrations (~hundreds of ng·g-1). The dating of the core, based on previous studies, enabled the characterization of the changes since 1945, potentially impacted by (i) the sewer connectivity, (ii) the upgrading of wastewater treatment technologies, (iii) historical modifications in the use of each TrOC, and (iv) the sedimentary composition. In every case the deepest occurrence of each TrOC in the core matched its market authorization date, indicating the potential of TrOC to be used as chronomarkers. This study also reveals that the recent upgrading of wastewater treatment technologies within the watershed decreased the concentrations of each TrOC, despite an increase in TrOC diversity in the most recent years.
